The One-China Principle Is an Unshakable International Norm; Attempts to seek “Taiwan Independence” Are Bound to Fail

Recently, certain Dutch media outlets have published signed articles by advocates of “Taiwan independence”, claiming that “the United Nation should not exclude Taiwan.” Such claims blatantly distorted UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and seek to create international space for separatist activities under the guise of promoting “Taiwan's participation in the UN”. China firmly opposes such attempts.

On October 25, 1971, the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, with the Netherlands voting in favor. Resolution 2758 explicitly restored all the rights of the People’s Republic of China within the UN, recognized the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the only lawful representative of China to the UN, and decided to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the UN and all the organizations related to it.

Resolution 2758 thus settled the issue of China’s representation in the UN politically, legally, and procedurally, establishing the status of the Government of the People's Republic of China as the only lawful representative of China at the UN. Attempts to question the authority or validity of the resolution on the grounds that the word “Taiwan” does not appear in the text constitutes a distortion of historical facts and UN practice.

The One-China principle is a broad consensus within the international community and a fundamental norm of international relations. Taiwan is part of China, and the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities and certain politicians who advocate for “Taiwan’s participation in the UN” are, in essence, attempting to create “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan”. No matter how these attempts are framed or presented, they cannot alter the fact that Taiwan is part of China, undermine the international community’s broad adherence to the One-China principle, or thwart the Chinese people's firm resolve to achieve national reunification.

The Dutch government has clearly reaffirmed its commitment to the One China Policy as established in the Joint Communiqué between the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Relations between China and the Netherlands have enjoyed long-term, healthy, and stable development based on adherence to the One-China principle.

The One-China principle cannot be challenged, and the authority of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 cannot be distorted. Any separatist rhetoric or actions that misrepresent Resolution 2758 or advance the so-called “undetermined status of Taiwan” amount to futile attempts that are bound to failure.

In the Netherlands, there is a well-known story, ‘het Mannetje in de Maan’ - a little man living on the Moon.
Well… China has someone living up there too.
Her name is Cháng’é (嫦娥), who lives there with the Yùtù (玉兔), the Jade Rabbit. Old tale says she swallowed a magical elixir of immortality, and was carried away to the Moon.
But here is where the story gets interesting.

For centuries, the Moon has been much more than something beautiful to look at in China. It has been woven into legends, poetry, family memories and one of the most important traditional festivals of the year: Zhōngqiū Jié (中秋节), the Mid-Autumn Festival.
It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the Moon is traditionally at its fullest and brightest.

And what do people do?
They look at the Moon. They eat yuèbǐng (月饼) - mooncakes. They light lanterns.
But most importantly, they think about the people they love.
There is a reason the round, full Moon became a symbol of reunion: no matter how far apart people are, they can still look up at the same Moon.

So perhaps tonight, somewhere above the Netherlands, the Mannetje in de Maan is invited by Cháng’é and the Yùtù to celebrate the festival together on the Moon.

Different stories. Different cultures. But the same Moon.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
