Ever wondered what’s behind a vaccine?

They are the result of scientific excellence, investment and researchers collaborating across borders to protect people from disease.

The UK is home to world-class clusters and facilities, from the Edinburgh BioQuarter and Liverpool’s vaccine ecosystem to Porton Down, with its expertise in biodefence and pandemic preparedness.
Equally, the Netherlands has valuable expertise through clusters such as Leiden Bio Science Park and Utrecht Science Park. Strengthening the connections we have in this front, can accelerate innovation and improve our preparedness for future health challenges.

During the World Vaccine Congress in Amsterdam, on October 19-21, The British Embassy The Hague organised a panel discussion. Opened by his Majesty Trade Commissioner for Europe, Ceri Morgan, the event brought together leading voices in government, academia and industry from both the UK and the Netherlands, including the Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Department of Health and Social Care, Professor Lucy Chappell.

The panellists emphasised that vaccination should support health throughout our lives, from childhood to healthy ageing, that prevention should become a cornerstone of our healthcare systems, and that research collaboration is an accelerator of innovation in this field.

How do we create more opportunities for women and girls, on the football pitch and beyond?

On October 13, the British Embassy The Hague and the KNVB organised a “Coaching Girls” workshop at football club Graaf Willem II VAC in Wassenaar.

Participants learned about KNVB’s coaching girls’ methodology and then put their knowledge to the test on the pitch with a school class.

Deputy Ambassador Keith Allan highlighted that the UK and the Netherlands share a love for football, and in addition to that the values that underpin the sport: values of fairness, equal opportunities, personal development, and accessibility.

KNVB General Secretary Gijs de Jong underlined the importance of campaigning together, as big football nations, to strengthen the position of women and girls in football.

It was a great day and another reminder of the strong connection and shared ambition between our two countries.

We will both continue to do all we can to create an environment where all women and girls feel welcome, supported and able to thrive.

Last week in the Netherlands, Captain Ian Stubbs, British Defence Attaché to the Netherlands, attended two moving rededication services, ensuring that servicemen who gave their lives during the Second World War are finally commemorated by name more than eighty years after their deaths.

At Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Lancashire-born Lance Corporal Ronald Smirthwaite of the York and Lancaster Regiment was rededicated. Long commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial as having no known grave, new evidence established that he had survived the action in which he was reported missing on 22 February 1945, having been captured alive but badly wounded. He was subsequently lost overboard during an attempted escape. His body later washed ashore and he was buried as an unknown soldier. Through painstaking research, his final resting place has now been identified and his headstone will now bear his name.

At Venray War Cemetery, a second service honoured four airmen of Lancaster PD374: Flying Officer Hough (RAAF), Pilot Officer Tales (RAFVR), Sergeant Burnside (RAFVR) and Sergeant Lawson (RAFVR), who were killed when their aircraft was shot down on 8 November 1944. Although originally buried after the crash, their identities were lost after the war and they were commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Historical investigation and forensic archival work have now confirmed their identities, allowing them to be remembered at their graves by name.

These ceremonies are a powerful reminder that remembrance is not a one-time act. Decades after the guns fell silent, the Dutch Recovery and Identification Unit, the Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and many dedicated volunteers continue working to ensure that those who made the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.

British and Dutch researchers produced almost 5,900 joint AI publications between 2016 and 2026.

But what more can the UK and the Netherlands achieve together on AI?

New Rand Europe research finds that our AI ecosystems are complementary rather than competitive. The UK’s frontier research, investment and scale is complemented by Dutch expertise in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and public-private cooperation.

The research also identifies concrete opportunities of working together on skills, responsible use of data, compute infrastructure and innovation in life sciences and agrifood.

Expanding upon the UK-Netherlands Innovation Partnership, signed in November 2025, we will continue to connect researchers, businesses, and policymakers, so that innovation delivers and benefits both our countries and Europe at large.

Last month, we commemorated those who fought and fell during Operation Market Garden 82 years ago.

Their sacrifice secured our freedoms. Freedoms that must not be taken for granted. History reminds us that peace, security, and democracy are not guaranteed and require constant effort.

As North Sea neighbours and close allies, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands continue to stand together in those values. Through our military and naval cooperation. Through our support to Ukraine. Through building the industrial capability, connecting the businesses and driving the growth needed to secure our future. Through NATO, the Joint Expeditionary Force, and wider European cooperation. The UK and the Netherlands work side by side to strengthen our defence and build resilient societies.

Together, we carry their courage forward.

Women peacebuilders from over 40 countries gathered in The Hague last week for the 2026 ICAN Women, Peace and Security Forum, bringing experience and expertise from their own contexts, including Uganda, Brazil, Syria and Ukraine.

At the reception at our Ambassador’s residence, we had the great honour of welcoming countless civil society representatives from conflict- and crisis-affected countries around the world, as well as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh.

A few participants shared their personal story with us and emphasised why it is so important that we continue to learn from and collaborate with each other.

Many thanks to Gabriele Costa, Robinah Rubimbwa, Hindrin Muhamad and Nina Potarska for sharing their perspective with us.

A taste of the UK in the Netherlands...

Hosted by British embassies around the world, the King’s Birthday Party celebrates His Majesty The King’s official birthday and the connections the UK has with its host country.

Here in The Hague, it was an opportunity to showcase the best of British food and drinks, from award-wining English wines and British cheeses to scones with clotted cream.

A huge thank you to the British producers and in-kind sponsors who shared their products with our guests, really helping the event come alive.

What role does the International Court of Justice play in international law today?

Professor Dapo Akande, the UK’s candidate for ICJ 2026 elections, joined the international justice podcast, Asymmetrical Haircuts to discuss this important question as well as the Court’s most recent cases to settle legal disputes between states.

As Chichele Professor at the University of Oxford, and candidate judge, Akande shares refreshing insights drawing from years of experience teaching international law students and advising government and international organisations, like the United Nations and the African Union.

He reflects: “I think we’ve actually seen how international law and how using the ICJ can help to shift things.”

This week, we were honoured to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh to The Hague for the ICAN Women, Peace and Security Forum.

As Champion of Women, Peace and Security, The Duchess joined women peacebuilders from more than 40 conflict-affected countries, recognising their leadership, resilience and contribution to building safer communities around the world.

The Forum’s theme, Security Reimagined, highlighted the unique insight women peacebuilders bring to preventing conflict, identifying emerging risks and strengthening communities before crises escalate. Discussions also explored the importance of accountability, international justice, and tackling conflict-related sexual violence as essential foundations for lasting peace.

At a reception hosted at the British Ambassador’s Residence, The Duchess met women peacebuilders and civil society representatives from around the world, recognising the extraordinary work they do in some of the most challenging environments.

In a world facing growing instability and multiple ongoing conflicts, the message from The Hague was a powerful one: peace is stronger when women’s voices, experience and leadership are at its heart, and meaningful progress is possible when we work together.

👑 The Royal Standard flew above the Residence throughout the visit, marking the presence of a member of the Royal Family.
