🦏Today on World Rhino Day we celebrate the existence of the rhino. 🦏

During a jungle walk in Bardia National Park, we were incredibly lucky to encounter a rhino mother and her baby.

For just a brief moment, they stood before us, allowing us to quietly admire this beautiful bond between mother and calf. Then, as quickly as they had appeared, they disappeared into the tall grass. 🌿
One of those magical wildlife moments that stays with you.

Do you know how long a baby rhino stays with its mother? ❓🦏 .

More figures and facts about the rhino in the link in the comments.

After the rain, the streams and flooded fields around our home come alive.

For generations, Tharu communities have practiced traditional fishing using simple nets and a bamboo basket called a deliya, carried to collect the day’s catch.

Everyday life in the countryside surrounding Bardia National Park.

5 Days ago was International Vulture Awareness Day | 🦅

Vultures are nature’s essential clean-up crew. The Terai including Bardiya is home to species such as White-rumped,
Slender-billed andRed-headed Vultures.
They have become rare, largely due to diclofenac poisoning, habitat loss and power-line threats.

During a field visit with our guests a month ago, we were delighted to see many species at the Jatayu Vulture Conservation Restaurant. We are happy to guide you there when you travel from Bardia towards Chitwan, Tansen or Kathmandu.

As you can see from the pictures, vultures aren’t the only ones who like buffalo! 😄🦅🐃 Even the wild boar thought it was pretty tasty! 🐗

This morning, at 6:30 a.m. , the Tharu women from our village 'Shivapur' completed their rituals dedicated to the god Krishna.
Wearing traditional Tharu dress, they walked in a procession to the river, carrying offerings of leaves, 🍃 oil lamps, and rice. 🪔
There, they placed the offerings into the flowing water, accompanied by their final prayers for sickness, grief, and bad luck to be washed away from their village.🙏

Today is Raksha Bandhan in Nepal, a day celebrating the sacred bond of love and mutual protection between brothers and sisters. Traditionally, sisters tie a sacred thread around their brothers’ wrists as a symbol ot this bond.

But today, there is no room for celebration. We live far away from the flash flood affected areas, and thankfully our family is safe. Nevertheless, we are deeply shocked and saddened that Nepal is facing yet another disaster. Every Nepali knows someone, directly or indirectly, who has been touched by this tragedy.

Our thoughts are with all the families who have lost their loved ones, their homes and everything they held dear. We mourn the brothers and sisters who cannot be together today to tie the sacred thread that represents their love and protection.🇳🇵🙏😢
