Introducing Nepal's upcoming microbial genomics service — from Shubham Biotech Nepal (SBN).

We're preparing to launch a dedicated genomics service focused on bacterial and yeast strain sequencing, identification, and characterization — with fungal genomics to follow. Our goal: give Nepali students, researchers, food & fermentation businesses, and diagnostic labs local access to genomics work that currently means sending samples abroad.

Before we launch, we want to hear from you. Take 3 minutes to fill out our pre-launch survey and help shape the services we offer: https://sbn-genomics.zite.so

Your input directly informs what we build first.

During his training visit, Sudip Silwal delivered a presentation on "Bioprospecting Nepal's Microbial Resources: Integrating Traditional Knowledge, Genomics, and Collaborative Research" to the team at the Centre for Pathogen Genomics (CPG), The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, the University of Melbourne — sharing SBN's work with the very experts who trained him.
The talk centered on results from the CPG Seed Grant, a collaboration linking SBN, Kathmandu University (KU), and CPG to build genomics and bioinformatics capacity in Nepal. What that partnership has delivered so far:
SBN's first in-house whole-genome sequencing capability — an Oxford Nanopore MinION platform — now running strains from our culture collection. An in-house bioinformatics pipeline, covering basecalling, assembly, annotation, and genome mining, taking us from raw sequencing reads to real answers. 35 genomes sequenced and identified so far, spanning 15 species — from antibiotic and antifungal compound-producing candidates to probiotic and PGPR candidates. Genome mining for biosynthetic gene clusters, pointing to enzymes and bioactive compounds worth pursuing further.
Grateful to the whole CPG team, the Peter Doherty Institute, the University of Melbourne, and our partners at Kathmandu University — this collaboration is building lasting genomics infrastructure, both hardware and expertise, for Nepal's biotechnology sector.

Proud moment for Team SBN.

Sudip Silwal, one of our early-career researchers, is currently at the Centre for Pathogen Genomics (CPG), The University of Melbourne (based at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity), for a two-week training visit — representing Shubham Biotech Nepal Pvt. Ltd. on an international stage.

Over the course of the visit, sudip is meeting with experts and getting hands-on exposure to genomics, next-generation sequencing (NGS), genome mining, and drug discovery. This opportunity is made possible through a collaboration grant supported by CPG, University of Melbourne — whose work on capacity building and knowledge transfer with partner countries is exactly the kind of partnership we're grateful to be part of.

For SBN, this is more than one researcher's trip. It's an investment in the depth of genomics expertise we're building in-house, expertise that feeds directly into our work characterizing Nepal's own microbial diversity.

Thank you to CPG and the University of Melbourne for hosting Sudip, and to every expert who has given him their time so far.

We have successfully run our very first Whole Genome Sequencing experiment, right here at Shubham Biotech Nepal Pvt. Ltd., using the Oxford Nanopore MinION Mk1D!

From library preparation to watching the pores light up on the MinKNOW dashboard in our lab, this journey has been nothing short of incredible.

None of this would have been possible without the world-class training and mentorship we received from the Center for Pathogen Genomics (CPG), University of Melbourne. Their expert guidance gave our team the confidence and technical skills to bring this cutting-edge genomic technology home to Nepal. We are deeply grateful for this unwavering support!

This is just the beginning for us. We are excited to harness this technology to drive innovation in public health, agriculture, and microbial research right here in Nepal. Onwards and upwards!

Check out our photos capturing the energy, focus, and precision of the entire process—from pipetting during library prep to watching the data stream in real-time!
