XYPEX WHITE PAPER - Protecting Precast Sewage Structures with Crystalline Technology

XYPEX WHITE PAPER - Protecting Precast Sewage Structures with Crystalline Technology

Both physical damage and chemical attack of concrete in sewage and septic systems is possible. However, chemical attack is much more prevalent and has two primary causes: acid attack and sulfate attack. In the wastewater industry, the acid attack mechanism is normally referred to as Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) – a process in which sulfides in the waste water stream are transformed by biological reactions into sulfuric acid. The sulfur compounds produced by this reaction pe*****te the concrete substrate helping to initiate sulfate attack.

Season's Greetings from Xypex

ON THE COVER! A Xypex project was recently featured on the cover of the Construction Specifier magazine. The parking garage of Tower 155, Boca Raton, Florida is two levels below grade with the presence of extreme hydrostatic pressure. The area’s water table is 1 m (3.5 ft) below the ground level, so making sure the structure is watertight was extremely important. Due to space constraints and a difficult installation process, a crystalline waterproofing system was used on this project.

XYPEX PROJECT: New Atlanta Water Infrastructure Built To Last

The ambitious $368-million Atlanta Water Program has successfully converted a defunct granite quarry into a 2.4 billion gallon reservoir and extended the city’s drinking water reserve supply from a mere 3 days to more than 30 days. Xypex Admix C-500 was added to the concrete for two critical flow control channels in order to help the city meet its 100-year longevity goal for the new structures.

The Runner-Up Winner for Australia for the 2020 Xypex Best International Project Award was presented to Xypex Australia for the Murray Irrigation Rehabilitation project.

As the largest privately owned irrigation company in the Southern Hemisphere, Murray Irrigation, Australia, continues to sustain its high performance in water delivery, security, and retention. Producing 1,000,000 mega liters of water annually and irrigating over 700,000 hectares of land, Murray Irrigation is responsible for maintaining over 4,000 bridge and culvert structures and 3,000 km of irrigation canals across the system.

After some years of use, it was evident that a large number (217) of bridge and culvert assets of varying age and stages of deterioration needed remediation. The concrete structures typically exhibited spalling and cracking. Therefore, a concrete waterproofing solution was needed that would be resistant to water erosion, cracks, and carbonation; a requirement specified in the engineering reports.

Xypex Concentrate was chosen as the preferred product to meet the engineer’s requirements for an anti-carbonation coating and because of the added benefits of utilizing Xypex Concentrate.
