Last week was tense for Nepal and its people as the nation witnessed severe unrest.
On 8 September 2025, a peaceful protest organized by the Gen-Z Group against widespread corruption escalated into violent riots within a few hours after being infiltrated by unidentified youths. On the first day alone, security forces shot dead more than 20 young protesters and injured around 1,000. Hospitals were full of injured protestors.
The following day, self-proclaimed protesters carried out massive destruction in Kathmandu and other parts of the country. Government buildings, residences of political leaders, supermarkets, and both private and public vehicles were set on fire. On the same day, protesters reportedly killed three police officers.
As of 14 September 2025, the nation is shocked by the tragic loss of 72 lives—mostly protesters and some civilians.
Fortunately, tourist sites, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, remained unharmed, and no tourists were attacked or injured. With the curfew now lifted, life is gradually returning to normal. All domestic and international flights have resumed.
The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has issued public notices assuring peace, stability, and the restoration of normalcy across the country, particularly in the tourism sector. The Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) has appealed the District Administration Offices to provide the needed assistance to the trekking and travel agencies to ease their services to the tourists.
