From grassroots change to national policy, German Development Cooperation is proud to champion women’s health, dignity, and rights in Nepal! 🇳🇵🤝🇩🇪
German Development Cooperation (GDC), through the GIZ’ health program, works with local communities and health systems to break taboos around menstrual health, combat harmful practices like Chhaupadi, and ensure that sexual and reproductive health and rights are accessible to all ♿.
👥Grassroots efforts: Outreach to more than 1 million people on social media for menstrual awareness and 9,000 community members through theatre and film to challenge harmful taboos. GIZ' S2GESI project has supported 91 midwives to improve delivery care and has implemented national cervical cancer screening programs in remote municipalities. 🌐
Furthermore, GDC supports Nepali partners in their endeavour to drive structural change🏗️: by upgrading menstrual-friendly WASH facilities in selected public schools of Sudurpashchim province, securing menstrual health indicators in Nepal’s 16th Periodic Plan, and upscaling digital birth registration across 58 facilities with the first-ever national budget allocation; through this, GDC works to bridge local impact with national policy.
At a recent meeting with the Honourable Minister of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security, Ms. Sita Badi, Ambassador Udo Volz highlighted Germany's commitment to gender-transformative health planning.
He also underlined the important work undertaken by UN Women in Nepal in various areas. Germany is the biggest financial contributor to UN Women globally.

At an interactive session on federalism at the Nepal Administrative Staff College -NASC, Ambassador Volz highlighted that German history 🇩🇪 has strongly favored a federal system, rooted in centuries of loose cooperation between small, independent territories.
In contrast, federalism under the 2015 constitution is a relatively new development for Nepal 🇳🇵. The country may benefit from lessons learned in nations like Germany, where federalism is not only deeply entrenched but has also consistently evolved to meet modern challenges.
