🚁 CASE STUDY

Lobuche to Lukla – Coordinating Timely Access to Medical Care

At approximately 4,940 metres in Lobuche, a trekker was reported with an oxygen saturation of 55% and a pulse rate of 127 bpm, requiring urgent attention and timely evacuation.

Alpine Rescue Service coordinated a helicopter evacuation to Lukla, allowing the patient to descend to a lower altitude and access medical assessment and treatment without unnecessary delay.

This case highlights the importance of choosing an appropriate evacuation destination based on the patient’s condition, altitude, available medical facilities, flight feasibility, and overall cost management.

In high-altitude emergencies, effective coordination means making timely and practical decisions to ensure patients receive the right level of care as quickly as possible.

What sets Alpine Rescue Service apart?

In an emergency, the rescue does not begin when a helicopter takes off. It begins the moment the call reaches the coordination centre.

A trekker may be stranded at altitude, weather may be changing quickly, the nearest landing point may be several hours away, and the receiving hospital may still need to be arranged. At the same time, the insurer, guide, helicopter operator, ground team, ambulance and medical facility may all need to work from the same information.

This is where professional coordination matters.

At Alpine Rescue Service, our role is to bring those moving parts together — assessing the situation, identifying the safest and most appropriate evacuation option, coordinating rescue resources, arranging hospital transfer and maintaining communication throughout the case.

With proven operational experience, a dedicated team, reliable coordination, rapid response, 24/7 availability and a strong focus on safety and compliance, we support travellers and partners when circumstances become difficult and time-sensitive.

From the first emergency call to safe transfer and continued assistance, Alpine Rescue Service remains committed to being a dependable rescue and medical assistance partner across Nepal.

Available 24/7/365.
