This week, we join the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand in the celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori language week, Hepetema (September) 2023.
Te Reo Māori is the key to unlocking the door to the Māori culture and the richness that lies beyond. For me, te reo is not only about language: it's about inclusivity, it’s about acceptance, it’s about breaking down barriers, it’s about building trust, it’s about healing and it’s about treasuring this taonga we have in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It is unique to us, existing nowhere else in the world. Together we can all gain a perspective about who we are and our place in the world. Dame Rangimarie Naida Glavish - Chief Advisor, Tikanga 💞

❄️ Winter illnesses are out in full force ❄️
These simple steps will help protect yourself and those around you; your grandparents, kaumātua, pēpi and tamariki, and those who are at a higher risk of becoming seriously unwell if they get illnesses like flu or COVID-19.
1. Get vaccinated against illnesses. You can book your influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations at www.Bookmyvaccine.nz.
2. Stay at home if you’re feeling unwell and take a test if you have cold, flu or COVID-19 symptoms. It’s a good idea to have Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) at home.
3. Get advice early - you can get free health advice and information from Healthline on 0800 611 116 anytime, day or night. Your local pharmacist can also help with advice about cold and flu symptoms, and a range of other minor ailments. Contact your GP or nurse for any other health needs and make sure you have enough prescription medicine in case you need to stay home for a while.
4. Wear a mask - we still need to wear face masks with visiting most healthcare services. It’s also a good idea to wear a mask in closed, crowded and confined spaces. This will protect you from infectious illnesses and help prevent the spread to others around you.
5. Keep up your usual hygiene measures - regularly wash your hands with soap or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, and sneeze and cough into your elbow or a tissue. Throw away tissues in a bin and then wash and dry or sanitise your hands.

Call Healthline for free on 0800 611 116, anytime of the day or night.
Healthline (www.healthline.govt.nz) can provide trusted clinical health advice, information and treatment from nurses, paramedics, advisors, and doctors.
The experienced and friendly staff will ask questions about the condition or illness you are calling about, or ask for a picture or a video – for example, a rash, a cut, or how your child’s chest looks when they breathe in and out. Staff assess symptoms and make a recommendation, which could include:
- advice on how to take care of yourself or your whānau at home
- referral to a Healthline doctor
- advice on next steps, which may include seeing your doctor or going to the hospital straight away
- advice on what to do if things get worse, and what symptoms to look out for.
If it is an emergency, call 111 immediately.

There's no longer a $5 collection charge to pick up most prescription items from your local pharmacy. This means most prescriptions will now be free for you to collect.
You may still have to pay to collect some prescription items, for example for medicines prescribed by private specialists and private dentists.
Any family which pays for 20 prescription items in a year is eligible for a Prescription Subsidy Card, which means they won’t have to pay for any more prescription items until 1 February the following year. A family includes a person’s partner and dependent children aged from 14 to 18.
Collecting prescription items for children under 14 is already free.
