Te Whau Pathway night lights
🌙✨ Lighting the way at Te Whau Pathway✨🌙
We’re putting the finishing touches on the new 1.4km Te Whau Pathway linking the SH16 shared path to Roberts Road in Te Atatū. The photos and video were captured at sunset on Monday, 2 March, during nighttime lighting testing along the boardwalk.
The testing ensures the pathway is well‑lit for safe use after dark, while keeping light levels low and sensitive to nearby residents and the surrounding environment. We’re also excited to share that the boardwalk will be opening on 20 March at 12:30 pm, so come on down and check it out. Our team has pushed really hard to get this great asset completed ahead of schedule!
And the momentum continues: a new section of the Te Whau Pathway is already underway in Avondale, extending this important connection for local communities.
We think it looks awesome and we look forward to welcoming everyone to experience this new pathway soon 🌿🚶♀️🚴♂️

Did you know there are native orchids in Aotearoa New Zealand?
They can come in all shapes and sizes and grow in all sorts of places, on the ground or on other trees, in forests, wetlands, alpine areas, and even on roadsides or in the Subantarctic.
Out of more than 120 species, many are rare and endangered, because of habitat loss due to wetland draining and forest clearing.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
👍 Please don't take any native orchids home! Not only are there laws and restrictions around doing so, but growing them successfully requires specialist knowledge for every species.
👍 Report any rare or uncommon species (https://www.nativeorchids.co.nz/ecology/conservation/) you find to Department of Conservation or NZ native orchids group.
👍 Report anyone selling native orchids, especially terrestrial species, to DOC. Reputable garden centres don’t sell native orchids!

The Wollemi pine, also known as the "dinosaur tree," was rediscovered in Australia in the 1990s after being thought extinct for millions of years.
This ancient conifer, a living fossil, is one of the world's oldest trees, with only 46 adults and 43 juveniles remaining in the wild.
Facing threats from wildfires and climate change, conservationists have bred genetically diverse Wollemi pines to ensure their survival. The first bred Wollemi pines have been distributed to botanical gardens worldwide, and one in England recently bore fruit, offering hope for the next generation.

Horticulture with mad abandon is all the rage, and it goes by the name chaos. What ‘chaos gardening’ specifically entails depends on who you ask, but every definition is inspired by the unruly growth of nature and a whiff of rebellion against the control and neatness of traditional horticulture. Overall, it is a welcome move towards a more natural style of gardening: an eco-friendly approach that has wildlife in mind and echoes the countryside's informal, unbridled look that is created by plants spreading and mixing unchecked.
