Police have arrested a man after fleeing from Police and driving dangerously across Auckland this evening.

Earlier this afternoon, the Police Eagle helicopter sighted a vehicle connected to a man sought by Police in the Mt Roskill area.

Senior Sergeant Michael Wickman says the vehicle was tracked to the Mt Wellington area.

“Police have attempted to engage with the vehicle, but the driver has driven off and begun driving in an erratic manner toward the Southern Motorway,” he says.

“Eagle has continued to monitor the Subaru being driven erratically northbound through evening traffic towards Market Road.”

Exiting the motorway, the vehicle continued into Newmarket.

“On several occasions the vehicle has been observed on the wrong side of the road and narrowly missing other vehicles and pedestrians,” Senior Sergeant Wickman says.

“The appalling behaviour continued onto the North-Western Motorway, where the Subaru has been involved in minor collisions with several vehicles on the Newton Road onramp.”

The Subaru continued west and exited at Te Atatū Road, where the vehicle has stopped because of damaged sustained.

Police units have immediately taken the 54-year-old man into custody.

Charges will be laid.

“It’s fortunate that the damage is only to vehicles, and no one has been seriously injured as a result of this reckless behaviour.”

Police have completed enquiries into a video on social media, showing a marked vehicle travelling at road speed with a mobile phone displaying video content on the dashboard.

The staff involved on 17 June 2026 have come forward, and have been spoken to.

The driver has been issued an infringement notice, and both staff have been reminded of the high standards required when operating Police vehicles.

Inspector MinHo Lee, Counties Manukau Central Police, says: “Police apologise for this incident, and we acknowledge the concern this may have caused.

“We want to be clear that Police officers must role model safe behaviour on our roads and they should lead by example.

“We are committed to maintaining the high standards our communities rightly expect of us.”

Police are disappointed following the deaths of seven people, and more seriously injured, after crashes on our roads across the country this weekend.

This number is incredibly disheartening.

There is no excuse for any driver to be endangering their lives and the lives of others with unsafe behaviours.

This number is absolutely devastating, and we are thinking of their families as they go through this difficult time.

Police are urging motorists to make better choices when getting behind the wheel.

Wear a seatbelt, put the phone down, and do not drive if you are impaired by drugs or alcohol. Sign posted speed limits are there for a reason, and we expect every road user to follow them.

These things might be the difference between you getting home safely or not.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Heremaia Manuel, who is wanted in connection with a sexually motivated burglary in central Auckland.

Today warrants in lieu of summons have been issued for the 41-year-old over offending in the early hours of Saturday morning (20 June).

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend, Auckland Central Area Investigations Manager, says Police have worked hard to progress the investigation.

“An offender has allegedly entered a woman’s home in Freeman’s Bay in the early hours, before allegedly committing an indecent assault inside,” he says.

“The male inside has been disturbed at around 3am and fled from the address.”

Police were called and an investigation commenced with urgency, leading to the identification of the alleged offender.

“This was a disturbing event for the victim, and our investigators have been following good lines of enquiry in recent days.”

Welfare has been put in place for the victim.

Detective Senior Sergeant Friend says warrants in lieu of summons have now been issued in the Auckland District Court.

“Manuel is sought for the offences of committing an indecent assault and burglary,” he says.

“We believe he is likely to be in the inner Auckland CBD area, and he is also known to frequent parts of Māngere in the past.”

If you know where he is right now call 111 or alternatively call 105 if you have general information about his whereabouts.

Please use the reference number 260620/7807.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police are deeply concerned after an Auckland taxi driver was found driving allegedly six times the legal breath alcohol limit.

The driver was working at the time.

Auckland Motorways staff responded to a driving complaint on the South-Western Motorway (SH20) after 2pm on Thursday.

“The taxi van was heading northbound, and another motorist called us reporting the driver had been potentially falling asleep at the wheel,” Senior Sergeant Bill Russell, Auckland Motorways, says.

“While speaking with the call taker, the caller advised the taxi van had several near misses with other motorists on the road.”

As the taxi van neared the Waterview Tunnel, its speed continued to fluctuate between slower and higher speeds.

Motorways units located the van on SH20 near the Mount Albert area.

The 40-year-old male driver was taken into custody for breach alcohol procedures.

Alarmingly, he allegedly returned a result more than six times the legal limit (250mcg).

“It’s deeply concerning to us that a professional driver has been transporting passengers while allegedly under the influence of alcohol,” Senior Sergeant Russell says.

“I shudder to think what might have happened had this man not been stopped.”

Senior Sergeant Russsell is praising the actions of the initial caller.

“The person that reported this to us should be commended for seeing something and doing something about it, calling Police.

“I understand the caller also got behind the van and put hazard lights on to try and warn other motorists, and we acknowledge their assistance.”

At this stage the driver has been summonsed to court on a charge of being a transport service driver with breath alcohol over 400mcgs per litre.

Police enquiries are ongoing and further action cannot be ruled out.

Police continue to take a dim view on threatening or violent behaviour at bus stops on the North Shore.

At the weekend, we received a report of young people making threats and stealing shoes off two members of the public at the Albany Bus Station.

All three young males fled on a bus.

This bus was stopped nearby by a frontline unit, and all three males were arrested.

A 15-year-old male has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, and he is before the North Shore District Court.

Both pairs of shoes have been recovered.

Waitematā East Area Commander Inspector Aron McKeown says the behaviour is unacceptable.

“We have no tolerance for this behaviour, and we will continue to hold offenders to account,” he says.

“Our staff will continue to be visible across the busway network, and we ask people to continue reporting offending so we can respond.”

Police have busted an offshore criminal cell operating across Auckland, allegedly producing and distributing methamphetamine.

Known as Operation Haste, eight search warrants were executed across various locations in Auckland on Tuesday morning, including Avondale and Pakuranga, resulting in 11 people being arrested.

Detectives from the National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) identified individuals linked to a Transnational Serious and Organised Crime (TSOC) cell who had travelled to New Zealand.

Detective Inspector Tom Gollan says Police will allege these people are responsible for the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine in Auckland.

“We believe this group entered the country specifically to manufacture illicit drugs, supported by several New Zealand-based facilitators.”

He says during the search warrants, which were supported by the Armed Offenders Squad, Police located and seized clandestine laboratory equipment and materials, including an operational laboratory.

“Approximately $200,000 in cash, pseudoephedrine and about 10 kilograms of methamphetamine have also been recovered.”

Detective Inspector Gollan says scene examinations at several of the locations remain ongoing and further charges are likely.

The 11 men, all Chinese and Taiwanese nationals, are aged between 21 and 53 and have since appeared in the Auckland District Court.

They have been charged with possession for supply of methamphetamine, importing precursors and participating in an organised criminal group.

“This operation highlights the ongoing value of strong cooperation with our international partners to rapidly identify and dismantle transnational organised crime groups,” Detective Inspector Gollan says.

“Police have zero tolerance for individuals who come into this country to profit from the harm illicit drugs cause.

“We are very pleased to arrest and hold this group to account.”
Operation Haste marks the 32nd TSOC cell dismantled by NOCG since 2018.
