Incentive budgets are being looked at more closely, and rightly so.

Businesses want to know their spend is working hard. They want clarity, accountability and a programme that delivers more than a nice few days away.

But when budgets tighten, the biggest risk is cutting the parts of the experience that actually create the return.

The welcome that sets the tone.

The dinner that makes people feel recognised.

The local experience that creates a shared memory.

The small detail that turns a trip into a reward.

On paper, those cuts can look sensible.

In reality, they can dilute the very reason the incentive exists.

A strong incentive programme is not about spending for the sake of it. It is about knowing which moments matter most, which details carry the emotional weight, and where the budget can be simplified without compromising the guest experience.

Because an incentive that feels forgettable is not cost-effective.

It is just cheaper.

The best incentive budgets are not necessarily the biggest. They are the most intentional.

Are you seeing more scrutiny around incentive budgets this year?

Jen’s back from IMEX Frankfurt 2026, and the biggest takeaway was not one destination, one venue, or one shiny new idea.

This year, the conversations felt bigger than “where should we go next?”

They were about access, air routes, value, sense of safety, political nuance, stakeholder confidence and whether an experience can genuinely justify the investment behind it.

Across the show floor, there was still plenty of magic. Brazil brought colour. Ireland brought music. Iceland brought drama. South Africa, Asia and so many others brought the kind of destination storytelling that makes you want to start planning immediately.

But underneath all of that, there was a more serious conversation happening:

- How do we design events that people actually feel?
- How do we prove the value of those moments afterwards?
- How do we use data better, not just because it looks good in a report, but because it helps us make smarter decisions?
- And how do we keep human connection at the centre, while still speaking the language of leadership, procurement and ROI?

That is the part we love. The creative thinking, yes. The big destination energy, absolutely. But most importantly, the strategy sitting behind it all.

After IMEX, Jen continued on a four-week trip through some of Europe’s standout destinations, so there will be plenty more insight to come.

But for now, IMEX proves to be a very good reminder that great events do not start with a destination. They start by asking better questions.

Come BTS with Jordy in Christchurch….

Christchurch gave us waka on the Avon, local dining, street art, gallery spaces, heritage venues, sunrise soaking, tram transfers, airport ease and a stadium concert moment all in one compact programme.

For corporate groups, Christchurch has serious range without making the experience feel overcomplicated. You can build in culture, food, wellness, business content and big celebration energy, while still keeping the programme tight and easy to move through.

Got something in mind? We’re all you need.

It is easy to remember the big moments from an awards night.

The stage lights.
The winner announcements.
The applause.
The entertainment.

But often, it is the smaller details that shape how the evening actually feels.

For the National Travel Industry Awards 2026, the guest experience started long before the first award was presented. It was in the welcome drinks waiting on arrival. The New York-inspired photo moments. The way guests moved through the space. The table settings, canapés, signage, sponsor touchpoints and little surprises that helped bring the theme to life without ever feeling overdone.

One of our favourite details was the makeup touch-up station, giving guests the chance to refresh before their moment in the lights. Exactly the kind of detail that elevates the theme and feels a little fun.

At Motive, this is the part we love. Taking the big picture and making sure every small decision supports it, from the first impression to the final farewell. Thank you to TAANZ - Travel Agents Association of New Zealand for trusting us to help bring such a special night to life! 💚

Jordy recently joined the Once in a Lifetime ChristchurchNZ Business Events famil, a programme designed to show what Ōtautahi can offer.

And the biggest takeaway? Christchurch has real range. The itinerary moved through the city in a way that felt easy yet thoughtful.

From a city meander with Amiki Tours and local storytelling along the way, to paddling the Ōtākaro Avon River by waka with Ngāi Tahu iwi guides.

We explored venues including Christchurch Town Hall, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, The Arts Centre and Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, each offering a different lens on what business events can look like in the city.

There were also plenty of moments that showed how a programme can breathe between the business content. An after-hours experience at Riverside Market. A sunrise soak at He Puna Taimoana. Street art with Watch This Space. Tram transfers through the city. And a huge live music moment at One New Zealand Stadium for its first-ever concert.

Christchurch gives corporate groups culture, venues, food, wellness, energy and smooth logistics, without needing to overcomplicate the programme. It is compact, but not limited. Creative, but still practical. Easy to move through, but full of moments that feel considered.

A huge thank you to ChristchurchNZ Business Events for hosting, and to all of the partners, venues and suppliers who brought the famil to life.

Internal event planning can look cheaper on paper.

But most of the time, the real cost gets absorbed somewhere else… by the people already juggling enough.

Because a large-scale event isn’t just a few meetings and supplier emails. It’s hundreds of hours of logistics, timelines, negotiations, rooming lists, last-minute changes and constant moving parts.

And usually? That workload lands on your marketer, EA, operations lead or People & Culture team alongside their actual role.

The result is often delayed projects, stretched capacity and a team trying to do two full-time jobs at once.

A good event partner doesn’t just deliver the event.
They protect your team’s time, energy and focus in the process.

That’s the part businesses don’t always factor in - but it matters.

Brooke recently returned from a famil to Niue, and it is the kind of destination that reminds us why different can be such a strong strategy.

For Concentive groups, Niue offers something rare. It is close enough to feel achievable, with direct flights from Auckland, but far enough removed to give teams a genuine sense of escape.

Think clifftop ocean views, crystal-clear water, cave swimming, snorkelling, culture, local hospitality and the kind of natural beauty that does not need much production to feel impressive.

Base your group at Scenic Matavai Resort Niue, with 180-degree views over the Pacific, and the potential becomes clear. This is a destination well suited to incentives, leadership retreats and smaller corporate programmes where connection, reward and breathing space are the real goal.

Niue is still developing as a MICE destination, which is exactly what makes it exciting.

One to watch, and one we are glad to have experienced first-hand.

AI is changing the events industry fast. And honestly, some of it is incredibly useful.

It helps streamline the moving parts, speed up planning and create momentum behind the scenes. We use it too.

But we’re also seeing more and more events starting to feel the same.

The same themes.

The same styling.

The same recycled ideas.

Because AI pulls from patterns, not people.

And the best events have always been about people.

The energy in the room.

The timing.

The unexpected moments that guests actually remember afterwards.

That part still comes from conversation, instinct and understanding what matters to your audience.

AI can support the process.
But the magic? That still needs humans.

All you need.
