Upon implementation, the so called “Employment Security Scheme” will initially provide a safety net to Omanis being laid off amid the economic downturn. The second stage of implementation will cover Omani job-seekers in general. Eventually, the scheme will protect all Omani workers and, thus, seeks to provide incentives for private sector employment, which is often believed to offer lower job security.

Oman is poised to roll out a 5% value added tax in six months’ time.
The move comes as the country’s economy requires necessary measures to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic and the negative terms of trade shock, induced by low oil demand and thus, low oil prices. The introduction of a VAT will help the hydrocarbon-dependent Sultanate diversify its revenue streams. IMF estimates reveal that the introduction of a VAT will account for around 1.5% to 2% of Oman’s annual GDP.
Oman opted to exempt basic food commodities, the education sector, medical sector, local transport sector and the supply of oil and gas and its derivatives.
