Before I leave today for a family reunion in Colorado, I want to share this image of Hekoi Tau Babaga, a Motu woman of Tubuseria village, Papua New Guinea, 2012. All of these designs were hand-tapped by a female expert with a lemon thorn.

Today is the first day of Rites of Passage Tattoo & Arts Festival with over 200 artists, including Shige (Japan), Jeff Gogue (USA), and my old friends Eddie and Simon David of Borneo Ink (Malaysia). Before I head off to the Royal Exhibition Building, I will leave you with a powerful image of one of the last fully tattooed Motu women I met in Papua. Because she was the eldest daughter, she bears special tattoos related to her social positon as well as others related to her fathers exploits during lengthy sea-trading voyages called hiri lakatoi.
