GOVERNOR JUFFA’S ELECTION PETITION CASE DISMISSED IN ORO
Oro, August 16, 2024 — After nearly two years of legal proceedings, the election petition against Oro Governor, Gary Juffa has been dismissed in Oro. The Governor expressed gratitude to the people of Oro for their unwavering support throughout the case, attributing the victory to their patience and solidarity.
In a statement outside the courthouse, Governor Juffa emphasized that the court’s decision vindicated his integrity and that of other professionals and leaders implicated in baseless allegations. He thanked his supporters and voters for their restraint during the challenging period, declaring, “This victory belongs to the people of Oro.”
Governor Juffa announced his intention to review Papua New Guinea’s defamation laws, considering the damage caused to reputations during the legal proceedings. He commended the justice system for resolving the matter and expressed relief that the allegations are now behind him. The Governor expressed his eagerness to refocus on the important work ahead without the distraction of unfounded claims that he believes wasted valuable time and resources.
Furthermore, Governor Juffa encouraged those wrongfully accused, including the Provincial Administrator for Oro, Trevor Magei, Ward Three (3) for Popondetta Urban LLG, Alie Pukari, Vali Philemon, a Public Servant, a Community Leader, Robert Tikai, to seek legal recourse to address the harm done to their reputations. He highlighted these individuals, recognizing them as leaders who were unjustly targeted.
The election petition initially raised ten grounds, with seven being struck out by the National Court in March 2023. Three grounds alleging bribery were allowed to proceed to trial, focusing on specific instances involving individuals like Vali Philemon, Councilor Alie Pukari, Trevor Magei, and Robert Tikai.
During the trial in Popondetta, the Petitioner's Lawyer informed the National Court that they would only pursue one of the three bribery allegations, abandoning the other two. The remaining allegation related to the actions of Alie Pukari and Trevor Magei regarding an envelope.
As Governor Juffa looks ahead to the future, he expressed his appreciation for the continued support of the people of Oro, crediting their unwavering backing for the successful outcome of the case. The dismissal of the election petition marks a significant milestone for Governor Juffa and his constituents, allowing them to move forward with renewed focus and determination.

"I want to thank the people of Oro for their trust and faith in me, I will not let you down.
I will be your voice in parliament.
I am flying to Port Moresby to join my Prime Minister, and I ask that you give him the benefit of a full term and we will prove all our critics wrong.
We are going to promote and protect PNG interests as best as we can.
We are yet to achieve the economic independence that we need, but we will get there.
Reforms are needed, laws must be changed, and the minimum wage must be increased.
We must make a concerted effort to take ownership of the economy so that we can construct the future.
Companies and investors must support governments that care about their people, not just governments that help their bottom line.
We now begin the vital task of fighting for economic independence and securing the future of our nation, by taking ownership of our economy.
Thank you, Oro Province, thank you Papua New Guinea.
We will not let you down."
