Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has completed a visit to some of the most remote and severely affected island communities in Milne Bay Province following the devastation caused by Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Maila, describing the experience as “deeply moving” and reaffirming the Government’s commitment to immediate relief and long-term recovery.

Prime Minister Marape travelled from Alotau to Misima, Rossel Island, Woodlark Island, and the easternmost atoll of Budi Budi—identified as the epicentre of the disaster—where communities endured up to eight days of continuous cyclone impact.

“Budi Budi is a small atoll with about 120 homes, a primary school, and around 450 people. To witness the extent of damage after eight days under a Category 5 cyclone was sobering,” Prime Minister Marape said.

𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐁𝐘 — Prime Minister Marape has issued further clarification on the Government’s response to global fuel supply pressures, assuring Papua New Guineans that decisive measures are already being taken to protect consumers, businesses, and the broader economy from imported inflation.

Prime Minister Marape said his Government had a proven record of steering the country through both domestic and international crises, and would once again act responsibly and lawfully to shield Papua New Guinea from the worst effects of the current global oil supply situation. He said the Government had successfully led the nation through the economic challenges inherited in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and subsequent global shocks arising from the Russia-Ukraine war and the conflict in the

James Marape has conveyed his heartfelt sympathies and reaffirmed the National Government’s full commitment to assisting Communities affected by the recent impacts of Cyclone Maila, particularly in Milne Bay Province and other affected parts of Papua New Guinea.

In a follow-up to earlier Statements, Prime Minister Marape said the Government is now intensifying its Response efforts as assessments continue across Provinces impacted by heavy rains, strong winds, and rising sea levels.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected,” the Prime Minister said.
“We have asked all Provincial Governments and the Autonomous Bougainville Government to furnish Reports on the scale of the damage and the number of people affected, so we can coordinate our Response effectively.”

Port Moresby | Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has intervened in the eviction situation affecting residents of Wildlife and nearby areas in Port Moresby, calling for an immediate humanitarian stay while the Government works on practical and long-term solutions.

Speaking at a press conference today, Prime Minister Marape said a high-level meeting involving relevant State agencies, led by the Chief Secretary, had reviewed the matter and engaged directly with the developer.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that the developer holds valid land titles issued in 2012 and 2013, and has secured court orders since 2018 affirming their legal right to proceed with development.

“This is not a straightforward issue,” Prime Minister Marape said. “The developer has lawful titles and court-sanctioned orders. However, as a Government, we must balance the rule of law with our humanitarian responsibility to our people.”

Port Moresby | Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has confirmed that he will assume full responsibility for the Defence Ministry following the decision by Defence Minister Hon. Dr Billy Joseph to step aside, as the Government moves swiftly to investigate serious concerns surrounding recruitment processes at Murray Barracks.

Speaking at a press conference today, Prime Minister Marape commended Hon. Dr Joseph for stepping aside voluntarily, describing it as an act of leadership and accountability in the national interest.

“I commend Hon. Dr Billy Joseph for taking this step in the interest of transparency and integrity. Leadership is about responsibility, and this decision allows a clear and independent process to take place,” Prime Minister Marape said.

The Prime Minister announced that he will take direct oversight of the Defence portfolio while Cabinet considers further advice on the matter. Hon. Dr Joseph will continue to serve in Cabinet in another capacity pending further decisions.

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has announced a K1 billion fuel stabilisation package and the establishment of a high-level Cabinet committee to shield Papua New Guinea from the impact of escalating global fuel prices driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Speaking at a press conference today, Prime Minister Marape said the Government is acting decisively to protect households, businesses, and essential services from sharp international price increases.

“The world is facing extraordinary circumstances. International fuel prices have risen significantly — in some cases by as much as 70 to 80 per cent — due to instability abroad,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“As a responsible Government, we cannot allow these external shocks to be passed directly on to our people. That is why Cabinet has approved a K1 billion intervention to stabilise fuel prices in our country.”

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has announced a major Policy shift to address Papua New Guinea’s growing Urban challenges, with the restoration of a National Urbanisation Office to coordinate planning, settlement management, and sustainable city expansion across the country.

The announcement follows high-level deliberations held earlier today at Melanesian Haus, where Land, Housing, and Urbanisation were discussed as part of the Government’s broader Reset @ 50 Agenda.

Restoring a Central Urbanisation Authority

Prime Minister Marape said the re-establishment of the National Urbanisation Office will serve as a central coordinating body to bring together all stakeholders involved in urban development. “We are working to restore back the Urbanisation Office as a focal point to coordinate all this work in Urbanisation,” Prime Minister Marape stated.

Port | Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has announced an urgent multi- agency stakeholder meeting to address the ongoing eviction concerns at the Erima– Wildlife area, signalling Government’s intent to intervene swiftly and responsibly.

The Prime Minister said he had only recently been informed of a private developer’s claim over land titles in the Erima area, reportedly supported by a legal firm, and had not been previously briefed on the matter.

“I have called for an immediate meeting tomorrow at 2pm with key stakeholders — including the Justice Department, Ministry of Lands, Police, NCD authorities, and the developer — to fully establish the facts and chart a responsible way forward,” Prime Minister Marape said.
