SMES Turns Waste Paper into Useful Charcoal Through Science and Math Activity

Turning waste into something useful, pupils of San Marcial Elementary School (SMES) learned how to transform discarded papers into charcoal as part of the school's Science and Math Activity held on October 30, 2026.

The activity provided learners with a hands-on experience in recycling, allowing them to discover how waste materials, particularly used papers, can be converted into a new and useful product through a simple charcoal-making process.

Beyond developing scientific knowledge and practical skills, the activity emphasized the importance of proper waste management in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. By reusing discarded papers, pupils learned that recycling helps reduce the amount of waste thrown away, minimizes litter, and promotes responsible use of available resources.

Through active participation, the learners explored the value of resourcefulness, creativity, and environmental responsibility while applying scientific concepts in an actual learning situation. The activity also encouraged teamwork as teachers and pupils worked together throughout the process.

The initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of SMES teachers and learners, spearheaded by School Principal I Simplicio B. Beñas, who continues to support meaningful and experiential learning opportunities for pupils.
