What was once an ordinary stretch of school grounds at Don Eufemio F. Eriguel Memorial National High School (DEFEMNHS) is now slowly transforming into a vibrant canvas of color, as the school officially launched its innovative environmental initiative, โ1001 Blooms.โ
Under the morning sun, students, teachers, and municipal officials gathered not just to plant flowers, but to plant a vision, rooted in sustainability, unity, and legacy. Armed with shared enthusiasm, participants in their floral outfits carefully placed their bougainvillea plants in different varieties, to their respective spots, marking the beginning of a project that seeks to cultivate at least 1,001 blooms across the campus.
Bougainvilleas, known for their striking hues of pink, purple, orange, and white, were chosen not only for their beauty but also for their resilience. Much like the students and teachers of DEFEMNHS, these plants thrive even in challenging conditions.
โThis is more than just a beautification project,โ shared Dr. Adela C. Libunao, Principal IV and the brain behind this initiative . โIt is a living reminder that growth takes patience, care, and collective effort. Through โ1001 Blooms,โ we hope to nurture not only plants, but also a deeper sense of responsibility among our learners, especially the graduating batch Makakalikasan."
The initiative stands out as both a creative and purposeful innovation. Beyond enhancing the schoolโs physical environment, it offers students a hands on opportunity to engage with nature and to learn the value of environmental stewardship outside the four walls of the classroom.
For many students, the experience was both meaningful and memorable. โIt feels good to be part of something that will last,โ said Joy Elvie Tiongson, a grade 10 learner.
At DEFEMNHS, the future is not just being imagined but it is being planted, one bloom at a time as Grade 10 Curriculum Chairman, Lourdes Garcia exclaimed, " Ang bougainvillea na dala ninyo ay hindi lamang bulaklak, [kundi] simbolo ng inyong katatagan, paglago, at pangarap. Patuloy ninyo itong dalhin saan man kayo magpunta dahil kayo ang susunod na mamumukadkad at magbibigay kulay sa ating komunidad."
As the โ1001 Bloomsโ project continues in the coming weeks, each planted bougainvillea becomes a symbol of beauty with purpose. #
