🗓️ June 03-04, 2026 | Alabel, Sarangani Province

As part of its continuing consumer protection efforts, DTI Sarangani, through Consumer Protection Division Support Staff Kristelle John P. Talino, conducted a special price and supply monitoring of imported rice in Alabel, Sarangani Province.
This initiative is strictly pursuant to Executive Order (EO) No. 118, s. 2026, which mandates a price ceiling of ₱50.00 per kilogram for imported rice (5% broken) for 30 days, effective May 14, 2026.

During the latest monitoring across five (5) retail and wholesale establishments, it was observed that traditional, pre-listed imported brands are currently unavailable, prompting retailers to stock alternative varieties such as Kohaku Plus, Alas (Jasmine), Mr. Chow (Japonica), and Kohaku (Jasmine) instead.

Compliance with the mandated ₱50.00/kg price ceiling remains weak for these alternatives, with current retail prices ranging from ₱54.00 to ₱60.00/kg. Store owners have reported that this discrepancy is due to their current inventory consisting of older stock acquired at higher purchase costs prior to the issuance of the Executive Order.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Sarangani Province, through its Negosyo Center Malapatan, conducted price and supply monitoring of Basic Necessities and Prime Commodities (BNPC) as well as construction materials in Malapatan, Sarangani Province.

The activity covered three (3) grocery stores and two (2) hardware stores. Results showed that the supply of BNPC and construction materials remains sufficient, with prices generally stable across monitored establishments. However, price increases were observed in some construction materials such as GI sheets, cement, marine plywood, and steel bars.

The Negosyo Center Glan, through TIDA-COS Daniel Carlo G. Acido, conducted a price and supply monitoring activity on Basic Necessities and Prime Commodities (BNPCs), construction materials, and school supplies in Barangay Poblacion, Glan, Sarangani Province.

A total of seven (7) establishments were covered — three grocery stores, three hardware stores, and one school supplies retailer. Monitoring results showed that the supply of essential goods remains sufficient to meet community demand, with prices
generally stable across all monitored establishments.

☀️ 𝗗𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻— in many parts of the Philippines, dry periods can last several months. Without proper irrigation, coffee plants experience drought stress — causing premature fruit drop, stunted growth, and significant yield losses that directly affect your income.

🌸 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝘁 — adequate moisture at the right time triggers healthy flowering and ensures that coffee cherries develop fully and uniformly, maximizing both quality and quantity at harvest.

𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿:

💧 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — delivers water directly to the root zone through a network of tubes and emitters. Highly efficient, minimizes water waste, and reduces the risk of fungal disease by keeping foliage dry. Ideal for farms with limited water supply or sloped terrain.

🚿 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — distributes water over a wider area, mimicking natural rainfall. Suitable for larger, flatter farm areas but requires more water and can increase humidity — which may heighten disease risk if not managed properly.

🪣 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 — a simple and low-cost method where shallow basins are dug around each plant to collect and retain water. Practical for smallholder farmers with limited resources and access to water.

🌿 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 — collect and store rainwater during wet seasons for use during dry periods. A sustainable and cost-effective approach that reduces dependence on external water sources.

𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄:

📅 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 — coffee generally requires about 1,500 to 2,500 mm of rainfall or its equivalent per year. Monitor soil moisture regularly and water only when needed.

🟢 𝙐𝙣𝙧𝙞𝙥𝙚 (𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣) — cherries are hard, starchy, and underdeveloped. Harvesting too early produces coffee with sharp, astringent, and grassy flavors that are unpleasant to drink and difficult to sell at good prices.

𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿:

✋ 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙋𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 — hand-pick only fully ripe cherries one by one, leaving unripe ones to mature further. This method produces the highest quality coffee and is ideal for specialty and premium markets — though it requires more time and labor.

🖐️ 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙥 𝙋𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 — all cherries are stripped from the branch at once, regardless of ripeness. Faster and more cost-efficient, but results in mixed quality that requires more careful sorting during post-harvest processing.

🔄 𝙈𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙍𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙨 — visit your farm in several rounds during the harvest season to ensure that cherries are always picked at peak ripeness, maximizing both quality and yield.

𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴:

📅 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 — in the Philippines, most coffee varieties ripen between October and February, though this varies by region and elevation.
