Today is World Sea Turtle Day!
Did you know that the Philippines is home to 5 of the 7 marine turtle species? These are: Green turtle, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Loggerhead and Olive Ridley. These species are now either endangered or critically endangered because of the human-caused threats such as climate change, habitat loss, marine pollution and illegal shell trade.
Sea turtles play important roles to marine ecosystems. Among these roles are balancing marine food web, maintaining healthy seagrass beds, providing food for fishes, supplying nutrients to beaches and increasing diversity in coral reefs.
Now more than ever, we need to protect sea turtles! May today’s celebration be a reminder to us all that we need to do our share to protect and save these sea creatures.
