🌊 Strengthening tsunami preparedness in Negros Occidental!
The first DOST-PHIVOLCS-organized tsunami drill in Negros Island was successfully conducted on June 4, 2026, in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, as part of the training program, "End-to-End Community-Based Tsunami Preparedness Using REDAS for the Province of Negros Occidental," held from June 1–5, 2026, in Bacolod City.
The tsunami drill, co-organized by DOST-PHIVOLCS and the Negros Occidental Provincial Government , brought together representatives from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), 14 coastal cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental, the Civil Defense Negros Island Region, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Negros Occidental, as well as local barangay officials, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
The activity served as the culmination of the participants' hands-on training using the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS), covering exposure data collection, tsunami hazard simulation, and tsunami early warning and preparedness planning. These scientific learnings were put into action through an actual tsunami evacuation drill.
Through science-based tools, localized planning, and practical exercises, DOST-PHIVOLCS continues to support local government units in strengthening tsunami preparedness and building safer, more resilient coastal communities.
