RESEARCH | Previous studies have shown the benefits of parents being involved in their childrenโs education (parental educational involvement or PEI), specifically on children's learning outcomes and socialโemotional development. Thus, it is important to explore the factors that influence PEI.
In this study, we examined the motivators, facilitators, and barriers to PEI among lowโincome parents in the Philippines. We engaged 31 parents in semiโstructured interviews or pakikipagkwentuhan. We found three groups of factors influencing PEI: parentโrelated factors (including parental aspirations, access to learning and financial resources), social support (from spouse, other family members, etc.), and schoolโand teacherโrelated factors (including invitation to be involved from teachers and the school and unpleasant past school experiences).
These findings have implications for acknowledging the challenges experienced by low-income parents in supporting their children's education, while also highlighting their resilience and resourcefulness in employing PEI strategies. We also discuss the crucial role of teachers and schools in effectively promoting PEI and supporting educational equity.
