DOST-PCAARRDโ€™s Crops Research Division (CRD) recently conducted the inception meeting of the project titled โ€œScaling Out Improved Garlic Production Technologies in Northern Luzon and Key Expansion Areas,โ€ led by Dr. Dionisio S. Bucao of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU).

The project seeks to improve garlic productivity by deploying the developed Package of Technology (POT) for garlic production, which includes recommended integrated crop management and postharvest practices and technologies, in Northern Luzon and key expansion areas in other regions.

Also discussed was the newly approved GALING-PCAARRD Kontra Krisis (GPKK) project, โ€œPromoting Food Gardens for Household Food Security and Community Resilience in the Ilocos,โ€ led by Dr. Menisa A. Antonio, which aims to enhance food security and community resilience in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur through climate-resilient, low-input home and community food gardens.

Following the meeting, the team visited project partner stakeholders to coordinate implementation activities and strengthen collaboration.

The activity was spearheaded by DOST-PCAARRD Deputy Executive Director for R&D Juanito T. Batalon, CRD Director Leilani D. Pelegrina, and Industry Strategic S&T Program (ISP) Manager for Vegetables Joel Norman R. Panganiban.

The activity was also attended by the MMSU University President, Dr. Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr., DOST Ilocos Norte Provincial S&T Director, Engr. Brian U. Rasco, and other key staff from DOST-PCAARRD and MMSU.

Showcasing research outputs and development initiatives in the fisheries sector in the Ilocos region, ILAARRDEC in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources โ€“ Region 1 (BFAR-R1), hosted the final leg of the 2026 Commodity Research Review on Fisheries and Coastal Ecosystems on September 8 via Zoom.

Composed of 11 papers from different member agencies of ILAARRDEC, the research review featured four papers from the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), the agency with the greatest number of papers. BFAR-R1 and Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University โ€“ South La Union Campus (DMMMSU-SLUC) also had two papers each, while DMMMSU-North La Union Campus (DMMMSU-NLUC) and Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) had one paper each.

The panel of evaluators included Dr. Michelle A. De Vera, Science Research Specialist II, and Dr. Fedelia Flor Mero Science Research Specialist II, both from the Department of Science Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources and Development (DOST-PCAARRD); and Prof. Victoria N. Malaya, Professor III of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU).

During the opening program, Ms. Antonietta Evangelista, the BFAR-R1 Regional Research and Development Cluster (RRDC) coordinator, expressed her warm welcome to all the presenters, evaluators, and other participants of the research review. She emphasized the importance of sharing research knowledge and experiences to make research outputs more meaningful, impactful, and beneficial to the fisheries sector and the industry in general. Also, she encouraged researchers to use the activity as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration, guide future research, and contribute to the advancement of existing technologies.

Additionally, Dr. Nathaniel R. Alibuyog, Consortium Director and MMSU Vice President for Research, Development, and Innovation (VPRDI) presented the rationale, policies, and guidelines of the research review. He thanked the participants for giving time to attend the review. Meanwhile, Dr. Sherlyn B. Nicolas, ILAARRDEC Regional Science and Communication Cluster (RSCC) coordinator introduced the evaluators and acknowledged the participants of the activity.

The result and recommendations of this research review will then be validated by the Regional Research and Development Cluster (RRDC) of the consortium in preparation for the upcoming Regional Symposium on R&D Highlights this October.
