Perched atop the rugged cliffs of Barangay Malabrigo, Lobo, Batangas, the Malabrigo Lighthouse has stood watch over the Verde Island Passage since 1896, making it one of the Philippines' oldest and most iconic lighthouses. For nearly 130 years, it has served as far more than a historic landmark—it has remained a steadfast guardian of life at sea.

Every night, its beacon guides vessels safely through the Verde Island Passage, one of the busiest and most biologically diverse marine corridors in the world. Its light has enabled generations of fishermen to return safely to their families, merchant vessels to navigate with confidence, passenger ships to reach their destinations, Coast Guard units to conduct maritime patrols and search and rescue operations, and countless mariners to traverse these waters safely.

The significance of Malabrigo Lighthouse extends well beyond the Municipality of Lobo. It serves thousands of fishermen, commercial and international shipping, inter-island passenger vessels, tourism operators, recreational divers, researchers, and coastal communities whose lives and livelihoods depend on safe navigation. By ensuring the safety of maritime traffic, it protects lives, supports commerce, strengthens tourism, and contributes to the continued growth of the nation's maritime economy.

What truly distinguishes Malabrigo Lighthouse is its unwavering reliability. Through wars, typhoons, monsoon seasons, and more than a century of changing technology, it has never wavered from its mission—to provide a dependable aid to navigation for every mariner who sails within its reach. Its enduring service embodies the very principles of the Philippine Coast Guard: vigilance, commitment, resilience, and selfless public service.

Today, under the dedicated stewardship of the Philippine Coast Guard, Malabrigo Lighthouse continues to fulfill its historic mission while adapting to modern maritime requirements. Although electronic navigation systems have become commonplace, its beacon remains an essential Aid to Navigation, providing a vital layer of safety and redundancy that mariners continue to rely upon.

Malabrigo Lighthouse represents the best of what a lighthouse should be—not only because of its remarkable history or architectural significance, but because it continues to perform the purpose for which it was built: safeguarding lives at sea every single day.

For nearly 130 years, Malabrigo Lighthouse has quietly fulfilled its mission without fail. Its legacy is measured not by the years it has stood, but by the countless lives it has protected, the voyages it has guided, and the communities it has helped sustain.

The Maritime Safety Services Unit – Southern Tagalog (MSSU-STL), through the Field Maintenance and Inspection Center- Southern Tagalog (FMIC-STL), with the support of Coast Guard Station Northern Quezon (CGSNQ) and the officials of the concerned barangays, successfully conducted a 15-day Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) and Repair Mission on several lighthouses within the Area of Responsibility (AOR) of Coast Guard Station Northern Quezon.

𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:

🏮 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Conducted Preventive Maintenance Service to ensure the continuous reliability of its lighting system.

🏮 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Repaired the sun switch (photo eye) and electrical wiring connections to restore dependable operation.

🏮 𝐑𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Rewired the lantern, charge controller, and solar panel connections to restore the lighting system and improve operational efficiency.

🏮 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐰 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Performed Preventive Maintenance Service to maintain optimal functionality.

🏮 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Refilled the battery electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid) and conducted Preventive Maintenance Service to sustain uninterrupted operation.

🏮 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Repainted the structure, repaired the flasher lamp changer, converted the lighting system from halogen to LED, installed an AC-to-DC power adapter, and successfully restored the lighthouse from Non-Operational to Operational status.

🏮 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 – Conducted Preventive Maintenance Service to ensure continuous operational readiness.

Standing on the remote islands of Burdeos, Polillo, and Patnanungan in Quezon, these lighthouses serve as vital aids to navigation, overlooking the vast waters of the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean. More than maritime landmarks, they provide critical guidance to mariners, support the uninterrupted flow of maritime commerce, enhance the safety of coastal communities, and reinforce the reliability of the country's maritime transportation network.

The successful completion of this mission reflects the unwavering dedication, technical competence, and operational excellence of MSSU-STL personnel in advancing the Coast Guard Maritime Safety Services Command (MSSC) mandate. Through the continuous maintenance of critical aids to navigation, the Philippine Coast Guard remains steadfast in ensuring safe and efficient navigation, protecting lives at sea, and supporting the sustainable movement of maritime commerce across Southern Tagalog's maritime domain.

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: Personnel from the Aids to Navigation Service (ANS) and Navigation Safety Service (NSS) participated in the SPX Aids to Navigation Buoy and Automatic Identification System (AIS) Technical Training held at Villa Excellance Beach and Wave Pool Resort, Tanza, Cavite, from 03 to 04 February 2026

The activity aimed to enhance the technical competence of ANS and NSS personnel in buoy and AIS configuration, operation, and troubleshooting - critical components in ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient aids to navigation across the Philippine archipelagic waters.

Through hands-on discussions and practical exercises, participants strengthened their understanding of maintaining and managing Aids to Navigation systems, directly supporting the Maritime Safety Services Command’s mandate of promoting maritime safety, efficiency, and environmental protection.

The training was also attended by representatives from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and JARZOE Builders Inc., fostering inter-agency and industry collaboration in the advancement of navigation safety technologies.

By continuously investing in the skills of its personnel, MSSC ensures that its frontline services remain responsive, technically capable, and aligned with modern maritime navigation standards.

The Maritime Safety Services Unit Southern Tagalog (MSSU-STL), through its Field Maintenance and Inspection Center- Southern Tagalog (FMIC-STL) and Navigational Safety Services Center – Southern Tagalog (NSSC-STL), conducted a coordination meeting with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Lucena and Coast Guard Station Southern Quezon (CGSSQ), followed by the re-inspection of navigational buoys within the Area of Responsibility (AOR) of CGS Southern Quezon.

The activity aimed to establish the technical and operational foundations to support the inclusion of repair and reinstallation of navigational buoys in PPA’s forthcoming programs and projects. This ensures that identified deficiencies are appropriately documented, assessed, and prioritized through coordinated inter-agency efforts.

The coordination meeting was attended by PPA Lucena officials, led by Mr. Reynaldo O. Francisco, DMD Manager, with Mr. Jessie L. Lirno, Project Inspector; Mr. Joel D. Gamet, PSD Manager; and Mr. Emard M. Queddeng, Harbor Master.

In a related activity, MSSO Marinduque, together with personnel from CGSS Santa Cruz, assisted the Port Management Office in the conduct of an ocular inspection of existing navigational lighted buoys under the jurisdiction of the Traffic Management Office, Marinduque, and Coast Guard Station, Marinduque.

These efforts highlight the Philippine Coast Guard’s sustained commitment to maritime safety through proactive coordination and the continuous maintenance of Aids to Navigation in Southern Tagalog waters.

From 21 to 25 January 2026, the Maritime Safety Services Unit–Southern Tagalog, through its Field Maintenance and Inspection Center- Southern Tagalog (FMIC-STL), conducted scheduled inspection, repair, and preventive maintenance activities on lighthouses in Quezon Province in line with its continuing efforts to ensure the reliability, functionality, and uninterrupted operation of Aids to Navigation within its Area of Responsibility.

During the maintenance period, personnel repaired sun switch/photo eye components, replaced defective lantern lenses, and performed other preventive maintenance work at 𝐋𝐒 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐨 in Brgy. Balobo, Infanta; 𝐋𝐒 𝐁𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐥 in Brgy. Bukal, Jomalig; and 𝐋𝐒 𝐏𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 in Brgy. Ungos, Real. These activities were undertaken to restore optimal lighting performance, prevent potential system failures, and maintain the operational efficiency of the lighthouse facilities.

The conduct of regular preventive maintenance services plays a vital role in enhancing the visibility and reliability of Aids to Navigation, thereby supporting the safe and efficient movement of vessels traversing key maritime routes in Quezon Province. Such initiatives contribute to risk reduction at sea and strengthen navigational safety for both commercial and small craft operations.

The Unit remains steadfast in providing dependable navigation support services and proactive maintenance programs to support the Philippine Coast Guard’s mission to promote maritime safety, security, and reliability across the maritime domain.
