DAPA, Surigao del Norte — Siargao Island Medical Center (SIMC) successfully performed its first Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s expanding capacity to provide specialized orthopedic surgical services in Siargao.

The procedure was performed on a patient diagnosed with degenerative osteoarthritis of the left knee, a condition that causes progressive deterioration of the knee joint and may result in pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

The Total Knee Replacement procedure was successfully performed by a team of SIMC healthcare professionals led by Dr. Christian Fontanilla, FPOA, orthopedic surgeon, with Dr. Iris D. Caberte, DPBA, serving as anesthesiologist.

The successful surgery highlights SIMC’s growing capability to provide specialized surgical interventions within the island, bringing advanced orthopedic care closer to patients in Siargao and nearby communities.

The milestone also reflects the hospital’s continuing efforts to strengthen its clinical services, surgical capabilities, and healthcare workforce in response to the evolving healthcare needs of the community.

With the successful completion of its first Total Knee Replacement surgery, SIMC takes another significant step toward expanding access to comprehensive and specialized healthcare services for Siargaonons, allowing patients to receive more advanced care closer to home.
