MACABALAN BRIDGE PROJECT INSPECTION
The Importance of Modern Infrastructure Projects in CDO, such as flyovers and bridges, are highly needed to address the worsening traffic congestion, especially since Cagayan de Oro serves as one of the gateways to Mindanao.
As part of civil society organization, the CCW continuously represent the concerns of the people and taxpayers of the city. We have conducted several inspections and follow-ups regarding various infrastructure projects in CDO that have experienced very slow progress.
One of the most recent projects we reported to the Office of DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon is the 10th bridge of our city, the Macabalan- Bonbon Bridge Project, which started in 2016 and has remained unfinished for 10 years.
During our inspections of the bridge project site in January and July, we concluded, based on our conversation with the DPWH Resident Engineer, that the LACK OF SUFFICIENT FUNDING was one of the major reasons for the delay. This prompted us to report the matter to Secretary Dizon in the hope of helping push for the completion of the project.
We pointed out that several infrastructure projects in other parts of the country have been provided with sufficient funding and completed within a reasonable period, while the Macabalan Bridge has struggled to receive adequate funding and has remained unfinished for 10 years.
It is good news that serious coordination has taken place. Secretary Vince Dizon recently visited Cagayan de Oro and inspected several DPWH projects, including the Macabalan Bridge. He assured our District 2 Congressman, Hon. Rodriguez, that the full funding needed for the bridge project will be provided by early next year so that construction can be completed and the bridge can help alleviate CDO's traffic problems.
This also highlights the importance of citizen participation in governance. At all times, we citizens should be involved in monitoring government projects and raising legitimate concerns when government services and infrastructure are delayed.
