RANK 1 GLOBALLY! 🇵🇭
The Philippines ranked No. 1 among 193 countries in the WorldRiskIndex 2026, with a score of 46.69—the highest disaster-risk score in this year’s global assessment.
The WorldRiskIndex measures a country’s exposure to extreme natural events and climate-related hazards, while also considering how vulnerable communities are when disasters strike. These hazards include earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, coastal and river flooding, droughts, and sea-level rise.
The index also evaluates susceptibility, coping capacity, and adaptive capacity, including how well communities can withstand, respond to, and recover from disasters.
For 2026, the WorldRiskReport gives particular attention to storms, examining how factors such as early-warning systems, building standards, infrastructure, preparedness, and institutional capacity can determine how severe a disaster becomes.
The WorldRiskIndex has a long research background. Its basic model was originally developed jointly with the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). Since 2018, the index has been calculated and further developed by the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict at Ruhr University Bochum. Its revised methodology now uses 100 indicators covering all 193 UN member states.
For the Philippines, the ranking highlights the continuing importance of stronger disaster preparedness, resilient infrastructure, early-warning systems, healthcare capacity, and long-term climate adaptation. 🇵🇭
