Typhoons turn rain into a destructive force that disrupts vulnerable communities’ access to water. Lithos Manufacturing challenges this irony by developing a cost-effective device for collecting, storing and filtering rainwater for use in sanitation and hygiene.

Created by chemical engineer Eleanor M. Olegario, each ML Foldable Tank can carry 1,000 liters of water, which is drawn from rooftops using a system of pipes. The water is processed through a nanotechnology-based Zeramic filter, which neutralizes acid, absorbs heavy metals and filters out organic materials to sanitation-safe levels.

Olegario received the National Award for Inventors from the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2024. Her invention was a winner of IPOPHL’s Socially Relevant Technologies Project in 2023 and was a finalist at the 2025 Filipinnovation Awards.

IPOPHL is strengthening ties with the Department of Information and Communications Technology - DICT to boost patent examination expertise.

This week, Director General Brigitte da Costa-Villaluz and IPOPHL officials met with DICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda to discuss future training and continuing education in ICT for patent examiners. Both agencies also agreed to explore collaborations on IP and innovation initiatives supported by the DICT.

From 59th in 2022 to 53rd in 2024, and now 50th among 139 economies, the Philippines continues its steady rise in the World Intellectual Property Organization's Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025.

This week, IPOPHL scales up its capacity in examining blockchain technologies.

In collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization and the Japan Patent Office, IPOPHL is holding the “Substantive Examination Training on Blockchain Technology” from 15 to 18 September 2025 at the IPOPHL Multi-Purpose Hall.

The training underscores IPOPHL’s commitment to equipping patent examiners with the tools and insights needed to assess patent applications in emerging technologies and the fast-evolving field of blockchain.

Intellectual property examiners play a key role in protecting and promoting innovation.

Through their work, they ensure the quality of patents, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights, enabling inventors, creators and entrepreneurs to take their ideas to market.

On November 11, 2025, WIPO and IP offices from around the will recognize and celebrate the significant contributions of IP examiners.
