SAMAR, Philippines โ Emphasizing its commitment to global educational standards and continuous school improvement, the Schools Division of Samar facilitated the administration of the PISA for Schools (PISA-Based Test for Schools) on September 30 and October 1, 2026.
The digital assessment was conducted in two designated public high schools within the province: Calapi National High School in the Municipality of Motiong, and Osmeรฑa National High School in the Municipality of Marabut.
To ensure the smooth, secure, and standardized implementation of the international assessment, a dedicated monitoring team was deployed, headed by Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Dr. Moises D. Labian Jr. He was joined by key monitoring personnel from the Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office, Regional Office VIII, and the local Division Office. Their collaborative oversight underscored the high priority the department places on standardizing the testing environment and supporting participating schools.
๐What is PISA for Schools?
The PISA for Schools is a specialized project developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). While the main PISA study evaluates education systems at a national level, PISA for Schools is designed to provide actionable, school-level estimates of academic performance. It evaluates how well students can apply their reading, mathematics, and science knowledge to real-life situations, rather than merely testing rote memorization.
๐Objective of the Assessment
The primary objective of PISA for Schools is to help teachers and school leaders evaluate their students' critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to apply knowledge creatively in novel, real-world contexts. Additionally, the assessment gathers vital information through student questionnaires regarding their learning environment, well-being, and attitudes toward learning. This provides schools with data-driven insights for global benchmarking, allowing them to compare their local performance against international standards and design targeted interventions for school improvement.
๐Qualified Learners
Aligning with the methodology used in the main PISA study, PISA for Schools specifically targets 15-year-old learners. To be eligible to join the assessment, student examinees must be strictly between 15 years and 3 months and 16 years and 2
months of age at the time of testing. These qualified learners take a comprehensive two-hour computer-based cognitive test covering the core domains of reading, mathematics, and science.
Through the active participation of Calapi NHS and Osmeรฑa NHS, the Division of Samar continues to champion DepEdโs overarching goal of elevating the quality of basic education in the Philippinesโensuring that local educational strategies are informed by global benchmarks and that young Filipinos are prepared to meet real-world challenges.
