Cawayan is a coastal municipality in Masbate Province known for its abundant marine resources, thriving fishing industry, and strong connection to the sea. Established on July 18, 1949, through Executive Order No. 244 signed by President Elpidio Quirino, the municipality has long relied on fishing, aquaculture, and seafood trading as major sources of livelihood. Its strategic location along the Visayan Sea and Asid Gulf provides access to productive fishing grounds, making the town an important contributor to the province's seafood supply.
Today, Cawayan is proudly known as the “Seafood Capital of Masbate Province,” home to the famous Sunday Seafood Tiangge in Barangay Divisoria. The market traces its roots to a traditional barter system where farmers exchanged their crops for the fresh catch of fishermen, fostering trade, cooperation, and economic interdependence among local communities. Over time, this practice evolved into a vibrant weekly seafood market offering fresh fish, shellfish, shrimps, crabs, seaweeds, and dried fish.
Every Sunday, the tiangge attracts buyers, traders, and visitors from across Masbate and neighboring areas, serving not only as a marketplace but also as a showcase of Cawayan’s rich maritime heritage. More than a center of commerce, the Seafood Tiangge reflects the resilience, industry, and community spirit that have shaped the identity of Cawayan for generations.
