The Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (CVCHRD) opened its Annual Planning for CY 2027 today, October 13, 2026, at Golden Prince Hotel and Suites, Cebu City, with Advisory Council members, technical committees, and institutional representatives joining onsite and online.

The morning session featured presentations of programs and collaboration opportunities from PCHRD and CHED Regional Office VII, alongside the consortium’s 2026 accomplishments and implementation updates.

These discussions provide a shared starting point for reviewing progress and developing the consortium’s priorities and plans for 2027.

𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

The 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 concluded with the awarding of certificates and a shared commitment to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity practices in participating institutions. The program formally closed with messages and next-step commitments following the two-day face-to-face workshop.

Day 2 of the 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 focused on translating key principles into practical institutional systems.

Participants worked through sessions on emergency response and spill simulation, laboratory biosecurity and inventory control, development of institutional biosecurity programs, SOP preparation for transport and waste management, and the presentation and peer review of draft institutional policies.

Guided by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗟. 𝗨𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 and 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗣. 𝗬𝗯𝗮𝗻̃𝗲𝘇, the sessions reinforced the importance of preparedness, clear procedures, and responsible laboratory practices in building safer and more resilient institutions.

The Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (CVCHRD), in collaboration with Cebu Technological University (CTU), officially started the face-to-face activities of the 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 today at the CTU Main Campus.

The training brings together faculty and researchers involved in activities with biosafety and biosecurity implications, with sessions designed to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in risk assessment, biosafety levels, laboratory controls, Institutional Biosafety Committees, emergency response, biosecurity, and institutional policies and SOPs.

More than laboratory compliance, biosafety and biosecurity help protect the people behind research and healthcare—and the communities they serve. Stronger institutional systems can help reduce biological risks, improve preparedness, and support safer and more responsible research and laboratory practices.

Guiding the participants throughout the training are 𝗗𝗿. 𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗟. 𝗨𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, Section Lead for Biological Defense and Research at the National Center for Biosafety and Biosecurity, UP Manila–National Institutes of Health, and 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗣. 𝗬𝗯𝗮𝗻̃𝗲𝘇, Professor VI at Cebu Technological University.

The seminar-workshop continues tomorrow with sessions on emergency response, laboratory biosecurity and inventory control, institutional biosecurity programs, SOP development, and the presentation of draft institutional policies.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🔬🧬

CVCHRD successfully concluded the Research Concept Development and Grantsmanship Workshop on 14 September 2026, marking the culmination of the Basic OMICS Training for Consortium Member Institutions.

Participants identified research gaps, refined research questions, selected appropriate OMICS approaches, developed preliminary research concept proposals, and presented their group outputs with guidance from Dr. Jose Ma. M. Angeles, Chair of the Department of Parasitology of the University of the Philippines Manila, and Dr. Adrian P. Ybañez, Professor VI of Cebu Technological University.

The workshop provided participants an opportunity to translate their OMICS knowledge into locally relevant and potentially fundable research concepts—an important step toward strengthening collaborative OMICS research in Central Visayas.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🧬

Day 2 of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀 opened with a recap of the key lessons from Day 1 by 𝗠𝘀. 𝗘𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗴 𝗙. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮, highlighting the interconnected nature of biology, the importance of matching the right OMICS approach with the research question, and the need for sound research design before moving into the application-focused sessions of Day 2.

Led by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗮. 𝗠. 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀, the sessions then covered the journey from biological samples to data generation, including sample preparation, quality control, OMICS technologies, and bioinformatics. Participants were reminded that while computational tools can process large and complex datasets, meaningful interpretation still depends on sound scientific judgment.

The training also highlighted responsible OMICS research, including informed consent, data stewardship, biodiversity, traditional knowledge, and ethical responsibilities throughout the research lifecycle.

Most importantly, participants were challenged to apply what they learned to real and locally relevant research problems in Central Visayas. The activity culminated in the development of preliminary OMICS research concepts, with three participants presenting selected concepts for expert feedback.

Among the ideas shared were a study on fermented Padina sp. as a functional feed additive for pigs using metabolomics and metagenomics, and an integrated viromic and transcriptomic analysis of insect-specific viruses as potential modifiers of dengue virus infection in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from Cebu.

These outputs demonstrated how OMICS can move beyond theory and become a practical tool for generating stronger evidence in health, agriculture, environmental research, and One Health.

Through this two-day virtual training, DOST Central Visayas and CVCHRD continue to strengthen the capability of the regional research community to develop well-designed, responsible, collaborative, and locally responsive research that can contribute to better health outcomes and innovation in Central Visayas.

Day 1 of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 successfully concluded today, August 24, via Zoom. The activity aims to strengthen the capacity of researchers to understand and apply omics approaches in addressing health and allied health research questions.

With 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗠𝗮. 𝗠. 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀, Chairperson of the Department of Parasitology, College of Public Health, UP Manila, as resource speaker, the first day covered the foundations of systems biology and the different branches of omics—including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics.

The sessions also highlighted how researchers can select the appropriate omics approach for a research question and design more robust studies through proper sample selection, controls, replication, metadata, management of batch effects, and validation.

For the health research community, these competencies can help researchers examine complex health problems more comprehensively and generate stronger, more relevant evidence that may support future diagnostics, interventions, and health strategies.

The learning continues tomorrow, August 25, with sessions on omics technologies, bioinformatics, ethics and data governance, research opportunities, and the development of preliminary omics research concepts.

Through this initiative, DOST Central Visayas and CVCHRD continue to strengthen the capability of the health research community to harness emerging scientific approaches toward more relevant, rigorous, and locally responsive health research.
