𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐢𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐬

𝗗𝗢𝗦𝗧-𝗩𝗜𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗚𝗨 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮, 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘀 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗸 𝗠𝗢𝗨 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗜-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Science and Technology Region 7 (DOST-7) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Valencia, Negros Oriental was held on July 22, 2024, at the LGU Valencia Municipal Hall.

This partnership is part of the iSTART project, a DOST-led initiative aimed at aligning DOST’s programs with local development plans to accelerate regional growth through Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).

The iSTART program is designed to assist LGUs in developing technology-based development plans for agriculture, manufacturing, and service sectors by engaging Researchers, Scientists, and Engineers in the planning process.

The attraction of new technology-based investments in collaboration with LGUs is also aimed for, spurring local development through the integration of STI.

The MOU signifies a mutual commitment to leverage science and technology for economic growth, improved public services, and enhanced quality of life in Valencia.

Technical assistance, capacity-building programs, and access to advanced technologies will be provided by DOST-7 to support LGU initiatives.

On July 5, 2024, the Department of Science and Technology Region 7 (DOST 7), Cebu Normal University (CNU), and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Alegria, Cebu, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Cebu Normal University to advance Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Development Planning through the ISTART (Innovation, Science and Technology for Accelerating Regional Technology-Based Development) Program.

Key initiatives already underway in this collaboration include the establishment of the CNU Alegria campus, the development of STI-based industry plans for 'manna' cinnamon, and the creation of bamboo product innovation and development facilities.

These projects aim to leverage science and technology to drive local development and economic growth in Alegria, Cebu.

The ISTART Program, spearheaded by DOST, aims to mainstream science, technology, and innovation perspectives in local development planning by supporting technology transfer, capacity building, STI-based investments, and collaborative projects.

The program's ultimate goal is to enhance regional competitiveness, create jobs, and contribute to national development through tailored initiatives.

Present at the MOU signing were DOST 7’s OIC-Regional Director Dr. Tristan L. Abando, CNU’s Vice-President for Administration, Finance, and External Affairs Dr. Joseph Elvir Tubilan, and Alegria’s Mayor Gilbert Magallon and Vice Mayor Verna Magallon.

This partnership underscores a shared commitment to leveraging science and technology to drive local development, with additional STI projects being identified to further benefit LGU Alegria.

[June 27, 2024] DOST VII iSTART Team and DOST VII PSTO Siquijor successfully conducted the STI Plan Validation Workshops for 2 more LGUs of Siquijor, LGU Larena and LGU Maria, on their 2nd day of implementing the iSTART program in the province of Siquijor.

Key personnels from each LGU actively participated in the workshops to enhance their Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) through STI Planning.

Both LGUs positively acknowledged the importance of integrating Science, Technology, and Innovation in their CDP for the continuous development of their municipality.

DOST VII iSTART Team, together with PSTO Siquijor, successfully conducted the STI Plan Validation Workshop at LGU Siquijor on June 26, 2024.

The workshop aims to enhance LGU Siquijor's Comprehensive Development Plan by integrating Science, Technology and Innovation in development planning for accelerating regional technology-based development.

Validation Workshop for STI Mainstreaming Held in Pinamungajan

Mayor Ana Jessica Baricuatro of Pinamungajan expressed her gratitude to the DOST 7 for conducting a validation workshop on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) mainstreaming in the Municipality of Pinamungajan. This workshop is a crucial step towards enhancing the municipality's comprehensive development plan by integrating advancements in science, technology, and innovation.

In her welcome address, Mayor Baricuatro emphasized, "To keep pace with Pinamungajan's rapid development, we value DOST's support in embedding science, technology, and innovation into our local development strategy."

This collaborative effort underscores a dedicated initiative to propel technological advancements and seamlessly integrate innovation into Pinamungajan's developmental framework.

The Department of Science and Technology Region VII proudly hosted the ScienTeach: Symposium for the Youth on May 24, an event aimed at igniting passion for science and technology among young Filipinos.

Held in Castle Peak Hotel, Cebu City, this symposium brought together students, educators, and six distinguished Filipino scientists for a day of knowledge sharing and inspiration.

ScienTeach is part of a series of episodes featuring National Scientists, NAST Members, and awardees renowned in their fields.

The event featured notable speakers including:
> National Scientist Carmencita D. Padilla,
> Academician Camilo C. Roa Jr.,
> Academician Cristina J. Montiel,
> Dr. Adrian P. Ybañez, Dr. Danilo B. Largo, and
> Dr. Ronnie E. Baticulon.

These experts shared their valuable insights and experiences, aiming to bridge the gap between science professionals and the youth.

The symposium had four main objectives:

> Promote science and technology
> Bring scientists closer to the people
> Inspire and encourage Filipinos to pursue careers in science
> Promote DOST's science and technology scholarships

The event was a resounding success, providing attendees with the opportunity to learn directly from the country's leading scientists and opening doors to future opportunities in the field of science and technology.
