The Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS) Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) and Site Management Units (SMUs), in collaboration with Silliman University, conducted a cetacean survey from April 26 to May 6, 2026, covering the southern and northern portions of the Tañon Strait. The activity was led by Louella Dolar, Edna Sabater, Theresa Aquino, and Elson Aca, who provided technical expertise and guidance throughout the duration of the survey. The survey aimed to assess cetacean occurrence, distribution, and abundance, while identifying important marine mammal habitats within the protected seascape. The activity was also conducted in partnership with the Provincial Tourism Office of Negros Oriental and the International Whaling Commission, in collaboration with Silliman University, further strengthening efforts in marine biodiversity conservation, research, and sustainable ecotourism management in the Tañon Strait.
A total of five cetacean species were identified during the survey. Among the recorded species, the Spinner Dolphin was observed to be the most abundant. Other species documented include the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin and Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin, while the Dwarf Spinner Dolphin and Risso’s Dolphin were also recorded after having last been sighted during the 2023 and 2024 cetacean surveys.
The repeated presence of these species underscores the ecological importance of the Tañon Strait as a vital habitat, migratory route, and feeding ground for marine mammals. Their continued sightings further highlight that the rich waters of the Tañon Strait remain a place where these remarkable creatures continue to live and thrive.🐬
