In the worsening oil crisis due to the war being waged by the imperialist US, our best contribution as commuters and citizens, is to play an active role in the present struggle. This is an issue not only for the jeepney drivers and operators, but for all of us, who, everyday, must face the rising commute prices and that of all other expenses.
While oil prices have risen from P50, to now being P90 to P100 for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, the big capitalists are using the crisis to gain even more money for themselves. In the corruption being sponsored by the government, the masses continue to bear the burden of VAT, excise tax, and the Oil Deregulation Law, which only serves to worsen our current state.
For this, we must be united in our call for the removal of the VAT and excise tax on oil, for the rollback of prices, and finally, to trash the Oil Deregulation Law; we also call for the nationalization of the oil industry so that it may serve the masses, and not the big foreigners nor the bureaucrat-capitalists, while we are being denied higher wages and lower prices for basic commodities. Lastly, we call for an end to the US war aggression which has cause the crisis we are facing right now.
Commuters, let us join the strike! Show the power of the commuter and jeepney driver united against the price hike, against the imperialist involvement, and for the genuine good of the masses!

๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐!
The relentless surge in fuel prices, worsened by the Oil Deregulation Law and regressive taxes, has reached a critical point. For the drivers and operators who survive on a constant daily income, they are a direct threat to their livelihood and their ability to provide for their families. For students who rely on jeepneys to go to school, the oil price surge may mean higher jeepney fares, and inflation on basic goods and products.
We recognize that participating in this protest is a massive sacrifice for our drivers who are risking themselves from earning their daily income. In an industry where earnings are already depleted by high pump prices, choosing to strike is a courageous act of protest for the benefit of the riding public and the Filipino masses.
To support the participating drivers, we are launching this donation drive where the money received will be given to the participating drivers who will have zero earnings during these two days of protest.

Kabataan Partylist - USCโs Statement on the Universityโs Recent Memo Response to Oil Crisis: ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐-๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐!
Kabataan Partylist - USC expresses serious concern over the administrationโs recently announced changes to learning and work arrangements in response to the ongoing oil crisis. While the memo frames these measures as efforts to reduce commuting burdens and energy costs, its implementation risks shifting the weight of the crisis onto students and university workers rather than providing meaningful relief.
For many Carolinians, the shift to online lectures on Fridays and Saturdays will not necessarily translate into savings. There will be less spent for transportation but it just leads to shouldering additional expenses for mobile data and higher electricity and water consumption in their homes or dormitories to attend online classes. In cases where students have both laboratory and lecture classes on Fridays, they will still need to commute to campus for their labs while also spending on internet data for online lectures. In effect, some students may end up spending even more.
Beyond the financial burden, online classes also raise concerns about the quality of learning. Limited interaction, technological barriers, and the isolating nature of remote learning weaken meaningful engagement between students and educators. Rather than strengthening academic support during a crisis, this setup risks deepening an individualized and disconnected learning environment, undermining the collaborative and dynamic learning environment that face-to-face education provides.
The universityโs shift to a four-day workweek for employees is also equally concerning. While presented as a measure to manage rising fuel costs, this arrangement may result in reduced salaries or longer workdays which can be potentially up to ten hours without corresponding overtime compensation.
Altogether, these measures reflect a familiar neoliberal response to economic crises, where the burden is offloaded onto individual students and workers while institutions prioritize cost-saving measures. The university administration must instead pursue solutions that genuinely support students and uphold the quality of education. Face-to-face learning should therefore continue, alongside concrete measures to alleviate the financial strain on students. These include scrapping the 6.7% Tuition and Other Fees Increase (TOFI), lowering or rolling back tuition and other school fees, and expanding financial assistance programs for those affected by rising living costs.
At the national level, the broader structural causes of rising fuel prices must be addressed. The Oil Deregulation Law should be repealed to allow the government to regulate oil prices, and the excise tax and VAT on petroleum products should be suspended to provide immediate relief to the public.
In times of crisis, solutions must prioritize the welfare of students and workersโnot merely institutional cost savings. The university administration must ensure that its policies genuinely support the community it is meant to serve.

On March 8, and in every day that follows, we honor the strength, courage, and leadership of women around the world. But recognition must go beyond celebrationโit must mean struggle, collective action, and resistance.
Across the Philippines, women bear the heaviest burdens of poverty, rising prices, low wages, and violence as they fight daily battles in their homes, workplaces, and communities. The persistence of the 12% VAT and other regressive taxes like the excise taxes on oil, exposes a deeply unjust economic system that extracts the most from those with the least, inflating transport, fuel, and food costs that women who manage household budgets and stretch every peso to feed their families endure most harshly. These hardships are compounded by policies that disproportionately harm women from working-class and peasant communities: the defunding of healthcare and housing, lack of protection for domestic workers, labor export programs that place many Filipina OFWs in vulnerable conditions, and the prioritization of militarization over social welfare. Such systemic failures fuel inequality, trafficking, prostitution, and gender-based violence. Under these conditions, women are forced to compensate for these failuresโworking harder, sacrificing more, and enduring conditions they did not create.
Our political institutions and society at large further reinforce economic and social inequalities. Even in the first week of Womenโs Month, recent sexist remarks from public officials drew attention, including statements by Rep. B**g Suntay. These highlight the danger when leaders, especially members of Congress who should model basic respect and accountability, normalize language that demean or objectify women. Such behavior should not be tolerated as it extends harm beyond words, intensifying the harassment, discrimination, and violence that women already face in their daily lives.
This International Working Womenโs Day, Kabataan Partylist - USC calls on everyone to join the biggest womenโs protest of the year!

Last February 25, Carolinian students marched in a Snake Rally inside USC - Talamban Campus to oppose the 6.7% Tuition and Other Fees Increase (TOFI) and to defend accessible education. This mobilization was a legitimate act of student resistanceโan expression of the studentsโ right to assemble and speak out against policies that directly affect the student body. However, instead of engaging with the studentsโ concerns, the university administration responded with surveillance and disruption, including the deployment of security personnel and the photographing of protesters.
A university must uphold an environment that fosters critical inquiry and democratic participation rather than one that fosters compliance through intimidation or punitive measures. When student activists are threatened with disciplinary cases or institutional sanctions, the consequences extend beyond the individuals involved; they restrict the democratic space of the broader student body and undermine the universityโs responsibility to uphold academic freedom and the fundamental rights of its students.
This incident highlights the urgent need to institutionalize stronger protections for student rights. The Studentsโ Rights and Welfare (STRAW) Bill, filed in the 20th Congress, offers an important framework for safeguarding these freedoms. Among its key provisions are the recognition of studentsโ right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, petitioning authorities, and freely discussing or criticizing university and national policies, while protecting them from disciplinary action for exercising these rights.
Amidst these cases of repression, Kabataan Partylist - USC calls on the university administration to uphold studentsโ right to organize, mobilize, and express dissent that must be respected and protectedโnot monitored and suppressed. At the same time, this situation underscores the urgent need to strengthen and fully implement policies that safeguard student rights. The struggle of Carolinian students today is part of the broader fight for accessible education, genuine academic freedom, and the protection of studentsโ democratic rights.

Yesterday, Carolinians conducted a historic snake rally against the 6.7% tuition fee increase. The snake rally was conducted because of the USC administrationโs continued push for a 6.7% tuition fee increase, in spite of widespread student opposition as seen in student surveys, consultations, and previous protests. Should the tuition fee increase push through, it will further burden students and families who already struggle to pay USCโs high tuition rates.
Yet instead of listening to Caroliniansโ legitimate concerns, the administration responded with intimidation tactics. The Student Disciplinary Officer repeatedly took photos of protesters, while security personnel were ordered to stop the snake rally.
We vehemently condemn such violations of Caroliniansโ right to organize. We condemn the repressive stipulations in the 2023 Student Manual that prevent rallies and student demonstrations โwithout permitโ. We assert the correctness of collective and militant student action, especially against a profit-driven and repressive system that inherently refuses to act in studentsโ best interests.

A 6.7% increase is not a minor adjustment. It intensifies financial pressures on students and narrows equitable access to education. Education must remain a right, not a commodity.
The February 28 deadline for TOFI submission to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is fast approaching. Once filed and processed, approval becomes largely procedural given the universityโs autonomous status. Our strongest opportunity to resist is NOW!
Carolinians, let us rise once again and assert our right to accessible education!
