PUBLIC HEALTH AND EDUCATION: FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE
With the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 177, classified as “Very Unhealthy,” we must take precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of our students and the general public.
We understand the concerns of parents, students, educators, and business owners regarding the suspension of face-to-face (F2F) classes. We recognize that prolonged suspension may disrupt learning continuity and affect business activity, particularly those that depend on school-related operations.
These concerns are valid, and we do not take them lightly.
However, given the prevailing air quality situation, our immediate priority must be the protection of public health, especially the health of our children, who are among the most vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.
This Friday, we will convene a meeting with key stakeholders, including the City Health Department, the Department of Health (DOH), the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), representatives from both public and private schools, the Chamber of Commerce, and other concerned sectors.
The purpose of this meeting is to assess the prevailing situation, hear the concerns of all sectors, and develop practical and balanced measures that will protect public health while minimizing disruptions to education and economic activity.
For now, we must exercise caution and prioritize the health and safety of our students and the general public. We will continue to evaluate the situation and consider the recommendations of our health and environmental experts. 🩷
