Emerging infectious diseases are not new in human history, but in today’s interconnected world, they are spreading faster and affecting more communities. Factors such as deforestation, urbanization, international travel, climate change, and the misuse of antibiotics create hotspots for disease emergence particularly in tropical regions rich in biodiversity like Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Historically, infectious diseases have shaped human societies. From ancient outbreaks such as the typhoid epidemic in Athens (430 BCE) to diseases that emerged during the Neolithic Revolution due to animal domestication, humanity has always faced evolving health threats. Today, globalization and environmental change continue to influence how diseases appear and spread.

Emerging Infectious Diseases are grouped for better monitoring and response:
• 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 – previously unknown diseases such as HIV/AIDS and SARS-CoV-2.
• 𝗥𝗲-𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 – diseases that return after being controlled, like drug-resistant tuberculosis and dengue.
• 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 – infectious agents that may be used in bioterrorism, such as anthrax.
• 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 – known diseases later found to have infectious causes, such as cervical cancer linked to HPV.

Examples of Emerging Infectious Diseases Today:
• 𝗛𝗜𝗩/𝗔𝗜𝗗𝗦 – Around 40.8 million people worldwide were living with HIV in 2024. Despite advances in treatment, it remains one of the most serious global health challenges.
• 𝗠𝗽𝗼𝘅 (𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗸𝗲𝘆𝗽𝗼𝘅) – Over 175,000 confirmed cases across 144 countries have been recorded as of January 2026.
• 𝗭𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀 – Often asymptomatic but dangerous during pregnancy because it can cause birth defects like microcephaly.
• 𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗦 (𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲) – A respiratory disease that can spread through close contact, particularly in healthcare settings.
• 𝗟𝘆𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 – Transmitted by ticks and characterized by fever, fatigue, headaches, and a distinctive circular rash; untreated cases can affect the joints, heart, and nervous system.

What can we do?
Public health protection requires collective action. Government leaders and communities must work together to strengthen healthcare systems and promote preventive measures such as:
✔ Safe sexual practices
✔ Mosquito and vector control programs
✔ Tick prevention awareness
✔ Proper hygiene and infection control in healthcare settings

Because diseases do not respect borders, international cooperation and community participation are essential. By prioritizing prevention, investing in healthcare infrastructure, and raising awareness, we can help reduce the spread of emerging diseases and protect future generations.

Tomorrow February 28,2026 is the LAST DAY of Registration for SK Intermurals Season 3.

All changes, follow-ups, and additional players must be settled tomorrow, including:
• Correction of names
• Change of jersey size and number
• Submission of lacking requirements

We will be finalizing all teams and individual entries tomorrow. No further changes will be entertained after the finalization.
