𝗨𝗣 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼 𝗧𝗧𝗕𝗗𝗢 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗼 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗗𝗥𝗥𝗠𝗢 𝗼𝗻 𝗞𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

October 8, 2026 | The UP Mindanao Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) visited the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) today at the Central 911 Compound in Matina, Davao City, for a productive face-to-face meeting with CDRRMO Department Head PLt.Col. Alfredo D. Baloran (Ret.) and the CDRRMO team.

Dr. Melvin Pasaporte presented the overall updates and detailed master plan for the UP Mindanao Knowledge, Innovation, Science, and Technology (KIST) Park. With the Davao City CDRRMO as our partner for the Emergency Service Facility—a vital component under Phase 1 of the park's development—the team reviewed and discussed the facility's structural and interior designs to align them with Central 911’s operational and technical requirements. This facility will serve as a hub for disaster resilience, ensuring safety and rapid emergency response for the future KIST Park, surrounding universities, and the ongoing Regional Government Center.

As next steps, the CDRRMO will issue a Letter of Intent (LOI) to us in support of our proposal to the UP Board of Regents (BOR), which will lead to a formal proposal to the City Government to finalize the facility's establishment.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire CDRRMO team for their continued support of and commitment to establishing the KIST Park as we work together toward a safer and more innovative future.

From benchmarking to partnership 🤝

On September 23, the Office of Research hosted a benchmarking visit from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines – Cagayan de Oro Campus (USTP Cagayan de Oro), led by USTP CDO Research Director Dr. Maricel C. Dalde. The visit was held at the Boardroom of the Center for the Advancement of Research in Mindanao (CARIM) Complex.

After a courtesy call with VCAA Prof. Maria Stella Salazar, staff from the Office of Research presented UP Mindanao's research workflows, outputs, and capability-building activities under the Research Management and Coordination, Research Communication, and Monitoring and Evaluation units. There were also presentations from the UP Mindanao Research Ethics Committee and UPMin Technology Transfer and Business Development Office followed by an open forum.

Prof. Joel Hassan Tolentino from the Department of Food Science and Chemistry - UP Mindanao (DFSC) also presented a proposal on valorizing agricultural waste for commercial and community development for funding under Japan’s SATREPS program and invited researchers from USTP to be part of the Mindanao team involved in the initiative.

Office of Research OIC Michael Noel R. Bonghanoy then led a tour of the laboratories housed in CARIM: the Precision Agricultural System and Intelligent Computing Laboratory (PASICLab), the Gender and Development Laboratory in Agri-Aqua and Natural Resources ( GAD Lab in AANR), and the Agri-Aqua Value Chain Laboratory(AAVC Lab). The delegation also visited the Mindanao Center for Disease Watch and Analytics (DiWA) and the Philippine Genome Center Mindanao (PGC Mindanao) at the College of Science and Mathematics.

September 23, 2026 | UP Mindanao Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) proudly shares that the Squid Cubes Technology, led by Ma. Lyn C. Torres, MSc., with Dr. Noreen Fundador as its thesis adviser and Principal Investigator, was selected as one of the eighteen (18) semi-finalists for the University Innovation Awards (UPIA) under the University Innovation Fellowship (UIF) Program – Batch 9, from 60 technologies nominated across the UP Constituent Units.

The technology will receive ₱450,000.00 in support of its continued development and innovation efforts. The recognition was announced during the UIF Batch 9 Demo Day Pitching, organized by the UP System Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) and participated in by innovation teams from across the UP System.

The UIF Program brings together innovation teams from across the UP System to advance promising university technologies. Throughout the program, participants underwent training, mentoring, consultations, validation, and innovation development activities aimed at strengthening their technologies and exploring pathways toward real-world applications.

Congratulations to Ma. Lyn C. Torres, MSc., Dr. Noreen Fundador, and the Squid Bouillon Technology team for this achievement and for representing UP Mindanao in the UIF Batch 9 Demo Day!

September 4, 2026 | UPMin TTBDO welcomed the BS Biology, BS Chemistry, and BS Environmental Science students and faculty from Notre Dame of Marbel University to the UP Mindanao Lactic Acid Fermentation and Purification Laboratory for an educational facility tour!

Dr. Melvin Pasaporte delivered a comprehensive talk on lactic acid and Lactobacillus research. The session gave the students valuable insights into core laboratory operations, microbial fermentation processes, and the practical applications of green chemistry and biotechnology. Exploring the facility allowed them to observe active research workflows and see how classroom concepts translate into real-world scientific solutions.

We appreciate NDMU for choosing the UP Mindanao Lactic Acid Fermentation and Purification Laboratory as a destination for your tour, and we look forward to future collaborations.

September 3, 2026 | The UP Mindanao Technology Transfer and Business Development Office and the UPMin Office of Research gathered for a meeting with Dr. Dave Centeno, Assistant Vice President for Research and Innovation (Convergence and Translation), organized by the Office of Research.

During the meeting, Dr. Centeno introduced OVPRI's latest programs, highlighting the "Tanglaw Client Stakeholder Discovery for Research-to-Impact Award Program" (formerly Humatak CRDI). The initiative aims to encourage researchers and creative practitioners across all constituent universities to step outside academia and challenge the assumptions behind their research and creative work.

Following the presentation, Dr. Melvin S. Pasaporte delivered a comprehensive presentation on the UP Mindanao Knowledge Innovation Science and Technology (KIST) Park, detailing its background, recent milestones, and ongoing progress.

Looking ahead, the next steps will involve packaging the proposal for presentation to the OVPRI and the Office of the Vice President for Development (OVPD), and ultimately to the Board of Regents (BOR).
