Former Mati City mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat officially took her oath as City Council President of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP) before PDP President and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte on Friday, May 22.

Rabat formally joined the PDP-Laban ranks and declared her support for the possible 2028 presidential bid of Vice President Sara Duterte, further strengthening the party’s foothold in Mati City, Davao Oriental.

The oath-taking ceremony gathered local party leaders and supporters, signaling continued consolidation efforts by PDP allies in Mindanao ahead of the next national election cycle.

In photos released after the event, Rabat was seen alongside Mayor Baste Duterte and party members performing the party’s signature gesture following her formal induction into the ruling Duterte-led political bloc.

Political observers note that Rabat’s move could influence local political alignments in Mati City and nearby areas, especially as discussions surrounding Vice President Duterte’s potential 2028 candidacy continue gaining momentum among supporters in Mindanao.

THE NEW SENATE MAJORITY 👊🏼

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano was elected as the new Senate President on Monday, May 11, after 13 senators voted to declare all leadership positions in the Senate vacant.

Cayetano succeeded Tito Sotto following a 13-9 vote, with two senators abstaining, as the newly formed majority bloc took control of the chamber.

Among those who joined the new majority bloc were PDP Laban members Senators Robin Padilla, B**g Go, and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, along with Senators Imee Marcos, Chiz Escudero, Rodante Marcoleta, Jinggoy Estrada, Camille Villar, Mark Villar, Pia Cayetano, and Loren Legarda.

THOSE WHO STOOD BY SOTTO

Sens. Ping Lacson, Kiko Pangilinan, Risa Hontiveros, Bam Aquino, Lito Lapid, Raffy Tulfo, Erwin Tulfo and Sherwin Gatchalian were among the senators who voted to keep Tito Sotto as Senate President during Monday’s leadership shakeup.

Their bloc stood in contrast to Duterte-aligned senators who backed Alan Peter Cayetano, whose camp ultimately secured enough votes to take control of the chamber, ending Sotto’s tenure in a sudden shift that comes as the Senate prepares for a critical impeachment process involving Vice President Sara Duterte.
