National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) joined government and community partners and the City Government of Paraรฑaque for the Turnover Ceremony and the Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Development of the Salt Industry Project (DSIP), held at the Peopleโs Hall of the Paraรฑaque City Legislative Building.
Present at the activity were Hon. Edwin L. Olivarez, City Mayor of Paraรฑaque, and Dr. Noemi SB. Lanzuela, Regional Director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic ResourcesโNational Capital Region (BFAR-NCR). Ms. Luzviminda P. Alojado, President of the Paraรฑaque Womenโs Fisherfolk Organization, represented the project's fisherfolk beneficiaries.
Representing NNC-NCR, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo delivered a Message of Support for the project's successful implementation. In her message, RNPC Federizo emphasized the importance of working together not only to improve local communities' livelihoods but also to contribute to a safer, healthier food system for Filipino families.
The activity featured the signing of the MOA among the City Government of Paraรฑaque, BFAR-NCR, and the project beneficiary, followed by the symbolic turnover of salt production and post-harvest equipment and materials. These interventions are intended to support local salt production and provide livelihood opportunities for the fisherfolk community.
The event also brought together representatives from partner agencies, including the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-NCR), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-NCR), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), underscoring the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration to strengthen the local salt industry and advance food and nutrition security.
From a nutrition perspective, the initiative is particularly relevant because salt, when adequately iodized, is an important source of iodine. Strengthening local production and ensuring access to quality salt can help create a food environment that supports better nutrition while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities.
The activity underscored the value of putting communities at the center of development. With leadership from the local government, technical support from BFAR-NCR, and active participation by the Paraรฑaque Womenโs Fisherfolk Organization, the project offers an opportunity to strengthen both livelihoods and local salt production.
NNC-NCR congratulates BFAR-NCR, the City Government of Paraรฑaque, the Paraรฑaque Womenโs Fisherfolk Organization, and all partners in this initiative.
Let us support this initiative to strengthen the local salt industry and deliver meaningful, lasting benefits to the Paraรฑaque fisherfolk community and the families it serves.
