Noong 2019, isa ang Akbayan Youth sa nagpanalo sa Safe Spaces Act na pumoprotekta sa mga Pilipino laban sa Gender Based sexual violence tulad ng catcalling at panghihipo. Sakop nito ang mga insidente sa pampubiko at pribadong lugar at maski sa online. Si Senator Risa Hontiveros at ang Akbayan Partylist ang kampeon nito sa senado at kongreso.

AN INSULT TO VOTERS' INTELLIGENCE
Akbayan First Nominee Perci Cendaña on Duterte's confirmation of VP run in 2022

President Rodrigo Duterte’s shameless declaration that he would run for the Vice Presidency in 2022 is an insult to the intelligence of the Filipino voter. Sobrang liit ng tingin ni Mr Duterte sa mga botante. Akala niya hahayaan ng mamamayan ang kanyang kasakiman sa kapangyarihan. Ginagawa niyang uto-uto at bobo ang mga tao.

However, his decision is not surprising. Pinatunayan na ito ng ilang ulit ng kasaysayan. Lahat ng diktador, kapag nakatikim ng kapangyarihan, hindi na bibitaw sa pwesto. History has shown us time and again that no tyrant relinquishes power willingly. They will scramble to come up with any scheme to justify staying in power.

For Duterte, a few scenarios are at play to perpetuate himself to power and evade accountability for his high crimes against the people. He can have his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte run for the Presidency, and should she win, it will basically be a political dynasty at the highest level. Another option is to field Senator B**g Go for President, and with him as Vice President, Duterte will run the country with Go as his puppet. This is already what is happening in the Senate.

We cannot, and we will not, allow this to happen. The coming elections will be this country’s most important test. The consequences of these polls will stretch beyond a single six-year term, possibly for decades to come. So we call on the people to register and vote, protect our institutions and re-assert our democracy. Every ballot matters.

It is time to take our country back from those who obviously do not have the people’s interests at heart, and only want power to enrich themselves, their friends, and their enablers. It is time to show tyrants that they have underestimated us, and that we will not be so easily deceived.

AKBAYAN TO COA: IGNORE DUTERTE

"Dedmahin ang pangulo. Ituloy ang mandato laban sa korap at abusado."

This was the call made on Tuesday by Akbayan Partylist to the Commission on Audit (COA) after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the body to stop performing its constitutional mandate of safeguarding the utilization of public funds.

Duterte also told members of his Cabinet to ignore COA reports. He made the remarks after the COA found “deficiencies” in the handling of the Department of Health (DOH) of P67.32 billion worth of COVID-19 funds.

"To the courageous people from COA, ignore Duterte. The people are behind you. We call on the COA to continue performing its constitutional mandate to ensure that the utilization of the people's funds is free from negligence and corruption," Akbayan Spokesperson Dr. Naguit said.

"The COA is an independent constitutional commission. It is answerable to the people, not the president. Ignoring Duterte is the best policy the COA can exercise to protect taxpayers' money," Naguit stressed.

Naguit said that Duterte's remarks have given government misspending and corruption his stamp of approval.

"The President just declared open season for corruption. By ordering the COA to stop performing its mandate and cabinet secretaries to ignore its reports, Mr. Duterte just gave presidential approval for government misspending, technical malversation and outright corruption," he said.

"This is not surprising though. It is in tune with his policy of recycling corrupt public officials. Mr. Duterte's administration is a recycling bin of corrupt and incompetent government leaders," Naguit said.

Akbayan called on the public to express their support for the COA. "We call on the people to defend the COA's institutional independence and integrity from the president's attacks, and remain vigilant in looking after the utilization of government funds," Naguit concluded.

DUTERTE, YOU'RE NEXT IN LINE

The decision of the Sudanese government to hand over dictator Omar al-Bashir to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity sends a powerful message against modern authoritarianism that will ripple around the world.

The message is clear: All tyrants face a day of reckoning. They will eventually be arrested, held to account and prosecuted for their crimes against the people.

This is the same fate that awaits Mr. Rodrigo Duterte. After Omar al-Bashir, the world will come after Duterte. Today, it is al-Bashir. Tomorrow, it is Duterte.

And Duterte knows this. It is this fear of eventual accountability that propels him to scramble and continue his inept and violent rule. He and his enablers know that eventually, the full force of the international community and the rule of law will bear down on them, hard.

But the clock is ticking, and time is running out. Duterte is already front and center in the ICC’s sights, and the tide is turning. The Filipino people are finding their voices, pushing back and rejecting Duterte's attempt to continue his tyrannical rule beyond 2022.

Duterte's days are drawing to a close. The long arm of the law will eventually catch him. Justice will find its way and in the end, prevail.
