2nd Global Symposium on Farmers' Rights, Sept.16-19, 2025
As part of its continuing efforts to realize Farmersโ Rights under Article 9 of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has achieved one of its major milestones โ the launch of a national registry of traditional crop varieties to recognize farmers as custodians of the countryโs traditional crops through the National Seed Industry Council โ Plant Variety Protection Office.
๐ Implemented in farming communities across Kalinga, Ifugao, Benguet, Albay, Bohol, and Lake Sebu, this initiative:
- Documents traditional crop varieties to preserve our rich agrobiodiversity
- Recognizes farmers as custodians of these invaluable resources
- Protects them from misappropriation through an official registry
Anchored on RA 9168 (Plant Variety Protection Act), RA 7308 (Seed Industry Development Act), and Department Circular No. 17 s. 2020 (Guidelines on the Listing of Traditional Crop Varieties for Conservation and Sustainable Use), this effort forms part of BPIโs broader initiatives to strengthen farmersโ participation, protect plant genetic resources, and promote sustainable use of biodiversity for food and agriculture.
While challenges remain โ from ensuring broad participation to building local capacities โ this accomplishment sets a clear way forward in ensuring fair recognition and benefit-sharing for our farmersโ invaluable contributions to agricultural biodiversity.
During the opening program, farmers from these communities were honored and awarded plaques of recognition.
