Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, play a vital role in the dissemination of information. It has changed the way we communicate, do business, get our daily news, fix and so much more. The most obvious pros of using social networks are the ability to instantly connect with people, know real-time news and information discovery, great opportunities for business owners, and for general fun and enjoyment. However, it is no secret that there's also a dark side in using social media platforms. There is the rise of misinformation and fake news. The freedom to post any content given to social media users, paired with the lack of accountability from social media platforms enabled the proliferation of fake news. Jennifer Christie Avenir of Barangay Bantud, Lapaz responsibly uses social media platforms and would like to stop or discredit fake news peddlers.

“In today's society, the use of social media has become a necessary daily activity. Social media is typically used for social interaction and access to news and information, and decision making. It is a valuable communication tool with others locally and worldwide, as well as to share, create, and spread information.
Social Media allows people to interact in ways we could never imagine, how we did till now without it. It is quite easy to catch up on someone's life through a simple message on the computer or mobile phone, even email. Social media enables communication for not only one's personal life but also for business life.
Being a user of social media, we should be responsible of whatever we share especially if it is a fake news or false informations because there are penalties implemented behind it .
One more thing that our government must be the implementor of penalties of the abused user of social media. They should have firmness in implementing and advocacy of such laws about social media.”
-Jennifer Christie Avenir

We must always remember that social media is a powerful tool since its strong influence in the country can shape society’s opinion on any individual or issue. We all must learn how to responsibly exercise our freedom to post content on our respective platforms, in accordance with the right to free speech, and of expression. We encourage everyone to report or flag posts that are considered false or misleading and we must always put in mind to think before we click.

THE CALL FOR LIGTAS BALIK-ESKWELA! 📣📚

Covid-19 pandemic has brought many challenges and one of which is the access to inclusive and quality education. With the inevitable shift to online and modular classes, both have their own share of advantages and disadvantages. Students had to face an overwhelming increase in academic workload, internet connectivity issues, and lack of physical interaction with peers. This has brought a bigger question of what the goal of our education really is: for learning or for mere compliance?

This is why the call for “LIGTAS BALIK-ESKWELA” is at a height. This is an inclusive campaign that considers the welfare of students, teachers, and school staff by encouraging long-term, sustainable plans of action for education. In the simplest term, this pushes for a safe return to school despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Cristian Carl Teves of Barangay Bantud, Lapaz is one of those who wishes for face-to-face classes to resume.

“Ang online class tama gid ka challenging. Budlay mamati sa maestra kay kung kis-a kahinay sang internet kag magasto sa internet load. Ka boring mag school nga ara ka lang sa balay. Masadya gihapon sa school upod ang mga klasmeyt. Amo nga pabor gid ako sa face to face classes nga ipatuman. Kabay nga ang pandemic nga ini matapos na kag makaeskwela na kami sang may katawhayan.”
- Cristian Carl Teves

Learning should not be equated to the number of tasks submitted on time, rather, it should mold students to reflect on the world around them, to go beyond their echo chambers, and challenge what they already know. Education will always be a right rather than a privilege.

DENGUE ALERT! 🚨🦟

As the rainy season is coming, we need to be vigilant and intensify preventive measures against illnesses, especially Dengue. The Iloilo City Government with the leadership of Mayor Jerry Treñas highly encourages residents to do our part in protecting our children, our family and community against vector-borne diseases through constant clean-up in our surroundings and being responsible in throwing our garbage properly to avoid adding more breeding places for the vectors. Victoria Dondonay of Barangay Bantud, Lapaz continuously practices habits that will protect us all in our homes and our community.

-Victoria Dondonay

Let us all be reminded that prevention is always better than cure. Ilonggos, stay alert and always be safe!
