Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, play a vital role in the dissemination of information. It has has changed the way we communicate, do business, get our daily news fix and so much more. The most obvious pros of using social networks are the ability to instantly connect with people, know real-time news and information discovery, great opportunities for business owners, and for general fun and enjoyment. However, it is no secret that there's also a dark side in using social media platforms. There is the rise of misinformation and fake news. The freedom to post any content given to social media users, paired with the lack of accountability from social media platforms enabled the proliferation of fake news. Francis Emil Pabalinas of Barangay San Agustin, City Proper responsibly uses social media platforms and would like to stop or discredit fake news peddlers. 👩‍💻🧑‍💻

“I am Francis Emil Pabalinas 17 years old and a senior student from Iloilo National High School. I always use social media to contact with my teachers and classmates since social media is the only means we have to communicate with our teachers and friends during this pandemic. Furthermore, social media encourages self-directed learning, which equips students to seek answers and make decisions on their own. Unfortunately, social media has a terrible side: bogus news. Disinformation has the ability to manipulate users for political or economic gain. As a young person who uses social media, I consistently fight misinformation and fake news by ensuring that people get their information from reliable sources. So, in order to prevent the spread of disinformations and fake news, I recommend that you always check before sharing, take a few extra moments to review the source or read the entire article to ensure that the news appropriately reflects the content and that the site is reliable.”
-Francis Emil Pabalinas

We must always remember that social media is a powerful tool since its strong influence in the country can shape society’s opinion on any individual or issue. We all must learn how to responsibly exercise our freedom to post content on our respective platforms, in accordance with the right to free speech, and of expression. We encourage everyone to report or flag posts that are considered false or misleading and we must always put in mind to think before we click. 💻🖱

THE CALL FOR LIGTAS BALIK-ESKWELA! 📣📚 Covid-19 pandemic has brought many challenges and one of which is the access to inclusive and quality education. With the inevitable shift to online and modular classes, both have their own share of advantages and disadvantages. Students had to face an overwhelming increase in academic workload, internet connectivity issues, and lack of physical interaction with peers. This has brought a bigger question of what the goal of our education really is: for learning or for mere compliance?
This is why the call for “LIGTAS BALIK-ESKWELA” is at a height. This is an inclusive campaign that considers the welfare of students, teachers, and school staff by encouraging long-term, sustainable plans of action for education. In the simplest term, this pushes for a safe return to school despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Danielle Kate Peñarubia of Barangay San Agustin, City Proper is one of those who wishes for face-to-face classes to resume.

“The covid- 19 pandemic has brought challenges to college students. Students faced financial problems that put their education at risk, had new living adjustment that made learning difficult, and often had a problem in connecting online. College invested a lot of money and time to classec, activities, and other services online. The pandemic also exposed how many students lacked another basic necessity for their eduction.
I’m in favor in bringing students back to campus . I’ll be able to concentrate harder on my learning because there’ll be less distraction than if I were at home. I can gain greater understanding, stories and real-world examples from teachers and other students and I may feel more comfortable and learn more easily in a familiar, traditional classroom situation.”
-Danielle Kate Peñarubia

Learning should not be equated to the number of tasks submitted on time, rather, it should mold students to reflect on the world around them, to go beyond their echo chambers, and challenge what they already know. Education will always be a right rather than a privilege.

As the rainy season is coming, we need to be vigilant and intensify preventive measures against illnesses, especially Dengue. The Iloilo City Government with the leadership of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas highly encourages residents to do our part in protecting our children, our family and community against vector-borne diseases through constant clean-up in our surroundings and being responsible in throwing our garbage properly to avoid adding more breeding places for the vectors. Gigi T. Perez of Barangay San Agustin, City Proper continuously practices habits that will protect us all in our homes and our community.

Maayong adlaw sa tanan! Every Saturday ang amon mga barangay Officials naga conduct sang Do Day or Saturday Habits.
1. Search & Destroy of mosquitos breeding site
2. Self-Protection
3. Seek Medical Attention
4. Support Government program like fogging/spraying if there is an outbreak.
Thank you.

- Gigi T. Perez

Let us all be reminded that prevention is always better than cure. Ilonggos, stay alert and always be safe!
