ATTENTION: ALL ILOILO CITY FARMERS

This is an urgent call to action. With Typhoon Uwan approaching please take measures to protect your vegetable crops.

🍅Flood Prevention-
Improve Drainage Channels:
1) Immediately inspect and clear all existing irrigation canals, ditches, and pathways around your vegetable plots.
2) Dig temporary, shallow drainage ditches between crop rows (if possible without damaging roots) and connect them to the main canals. This allows surface water to run off quickly.
3)Elevate Crops (If Possible):
For high-value or most susceptible crops, if you have access to materials, create temporary raised beds or mounds by piling soil around the base of the plants to elevate the root zone above standing water.
4) For small plots, use pots or containers and temporarily move them to a higher, secure area.

🍅Protect the Soil Surface:
5) Apply mulch (rice hull, straw, dried grass) around the base of plants. A 1-2 inch layer can lessen the impact of heavy raindrops, reducing soil splash (which spreads diseases) and slowing soil erosion.
🍅Prevention from Wind and Rain Damage
6) Provide Staking and Trellising Support:
6.1) Reinforce existing stakes for tall vegetables like tomatoes, pole beans, and eggplants. Use thicker bamboo stakes and ensure they are driven deep into the soil.
6.2) Tie plants loosely but securely to the stakes using soft material like old rags or twine to prevent stem damage.
🍅Harvest and Pruning:
7) Harvest all mature or nearly mature vegetables immediately, regardless of size.
8,) Remove excess leaves and non-productive branches from sturdy plants (like eggplants or pepper) to reduce the surface area that catches the wind.
🍅Protect Structures:
9) Secure greenhouses, shade nets, and simple shelters. Anchor ropes or steel cables to the ground to keep structures from being blown away or collapsing. .
🍅 Disease and Post-Typhoon Preparation
-Monitor and Treat:
10) After the typhoon passes and the floodwaters recede, inspect your crops for signs of damage.
11) Prepare to apply a recommended fungicide or bactericide as a preventive measure against common diseases like damping-off or soft rot, which thrive in waterlogged conditions.
🍅Prepare for Nutrient Loss:
12) Have foliar fertilizer ready to spray on the leaves after the storm to help plants recover quickly once it is safe to do so.
