In celebration of the 125th Semana sang Iloilo and in observance of Earth Day on April 22, a mangrove planting activity was successfully conducted in Brgy. San Fernando, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, bringing together employees of the Iloilo Provincial Government and the Local Government Unit of Barotac Viejo.

Mangroves, often overlooked, stand as natural barriers against storm surges and erosion while serving as vital nurseries for marine life. In San Fernando, their significance was deeply understood. With every propagules planted, there was a shared recognition of the role these small beginnings would play in safeguarding communities and sustaining livelihoods.

In time, they will grow into a living testament to what can be achieved when communities come together, not only to celebrate milestones like the Semana sang Iloilo, but to act with intention for the future.

Happy 125th Semana sang Iloilo!

The province of Iloilo once again marked a meaningful pause for the planet through 2026 Earth Hour: Ligum Dulom Year 4. What began as a symbolic switching off of lights unfolded into a vibrant gathering of purpose, participation, and shared responsibility.

This yearโ€™s observance transformed the Capitol grounds into a space of both reflection and engagement. Interactive booths set up by the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO), PPSK RCY, and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) invited the public to take a closer look at everyday environmental actions.

Participants were also encouraged to bring in-season fruit-bearing tree seeds and native tree seeds in support of Project LISOโ€”quietly weaving the promise of future forests into the nightโ€™s celebration.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) added a thoughtful touch, offering free dental check-ups alongside a 360ยฐ glam booth and photo booth.
The Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) further grounded the event with its water booth.

As the evening deepened, performances from various agencies filled the dimly lit space, bringing warmth and life to the occasion.

More than a symbolic turning off lights, : continues to grow into a movement that calls for deeper awareness and sustained action. In Iloilo, Ligum Dulom has become a reminder that even the simplest gesture, when done together, can spark something far greater.

The Province of Iloilo convened key actors in water governance and development for a Water Stakeholders Summit, bringing together national agencies, LGUs, local water districts, BAWASA, water service providers, and partners to align efforts toward a more secure and sustainable water future.

Central to the discussions is the presentation of the summitโ€™s rationale, alongside a comprehensive situationer on the state of water security in Iloilo.

This is complemented by a series of presentations from IPG Water Security Group members, highlighting ongoing water security initiatives, programs, projects, and activities.

CRS-IWARI project manager, Mr. Arce Dion Chua and Consultant Engr. Eduardo Bornilla, Jr. presented the draft Iloilo Province Integrated Water Security Plan. It was emphasized that the plan is not merely a compilation of water-related PPAs, but a unifying document that harmonizes these initiatives.

An open forum followed, providing stakeholders the opportunity to raise insights, share experiences, and clarify key points.

A key highlight was the distribution of mock cheques to beneficiaries of Iloilo Water Works, led by Engr. Romeo C. Andig, Office of the Provincial Engineer.

Through this summit, the province of Iloilo reaffirms its commitment to building a cohesive and forward-looking water security agendaโ€”one that ensures sufficient, accessible, potable, and affordable water for every Ilonggo.

What was once an abandoned and unproductive fishpond in Sitio Panus-on, Brgy. Nabitasan, Leganes, Iloilo has slowly transformed into a thriving coastal forest.

As the mangroves matured, the once-barren fishpond gradually evolved into a flourishing coastal habitat. By 2021, the area had grown into a dense mangrove forest, extending beyond the species originally planted.

Today, the site hosts 15 different mangrove species and provides refuge to at least 39 species of migratory birds. It has also become an important carbon sink and a living laboratory for biodiversity conservation and ecological research.

The area is maintained and managed by the Province as the
