MIDSAYAP, Cotabato—Following its rescue from a local farm, a Philippine tarsier (𝘛𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘢), also classified as (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘢), was successfully released back into its natural habitat in Barangay Tomado, Aleosan, Cotabato (October 4).

According to a report, a farmer, Randy Malinao first discovered the nocturnal mammal on October 3 around three in the afternoon. Malinao spotted the tarsier within the bounds of his agricultural property in Barangay Tomado. Aware of its ecological importance, he immediately reported the sighting and turned it over to environmental authorities for a health assessment.

The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Midsayap facilitated the wildlife release operation, ensuring the primate's safety and proper handling; the species is classified as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Following a thorough evaluation to ensure the primate was fit to return to the wild, CENRO Midsayap later led its release. Officials praised Malinao's quick action, emphasizing that community involvement plays a vital role in conserving vulnerable species. 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗢𝗦 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬 — The Protected Area Management Office–Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMO-SBPS) gathered more than 200 Bantay Dagat members including partners from across Sarangani Bay for the 4th Bantay Dagat Summit on October 1 at Venue 88 Hotel and Events, General Santos City.

The annual summit served as a venue to strengthen the capacity and well-being of these coastal frontliners while recognizing their significant contributions to coastal law enforcement and the continuing protection, conservation, and sustainable management of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS).

Anchored on strengthening both the technical capacity and well-being of coastal frontliners, the summit featured a Post-Earthquake Psychosocial Support and Well-Being Session, presentations of Bantay Dagat coastal law enforcement accomplishments, and an orientation on Bantay Dagat accomplishment reporting. Breakout learning sessions also covered the effects of El Niño, SBPS policies, common violations under the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Enforcement Manual of Operations (ELEMO), and marine megafauna stranding rescue and response procedures.

The summit also recognized exemplary Bantay Dagat initiatives and accomplishments across SBPS. LGU General Santos City received the Best in CEPA Activity award, while LGU Glan was recognized for Best Stranding Response and LGU Kiamba for Best in Patrolling Mechanism. Individual Bantay Dagat members were likewise recognized as Best Performing Bantay Dagat, namely: Crispolo Mahinay and Leo Garcia of General Santos City; Marlon Rivera of Maitum; Efren Lahindo and Danny Paradela of Glan; Mohammad Ebne E. Toto of Malapatan; Francisco Bibat Jr. and Mohammad Ali Omalmaya of Alabel; and Benjo Gadier of Kiamba. The summit was also joined by partner agencies, including the Philippine National Police Regional Office XII, Philippine National Police–Maritime Group (PNP-MG), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and concerned LGUs, reaffirming the importance of sustained inter-agency and community collaboration in safeguarding the coastal and marine resources of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape.

"Our Bantay Dagat members are vital partners in the enforcement of protected area rules and regulations. Their presence on the ground strengthens our efforts to prevent violations and ensure the protection of Sarangani Bay and its coastal and marine resources,” DENR XII OIC Regional Executive Director Maria Elvira V. Lumayag emphasized.

Through the annual summit, DENR-PAMO-SBPS continues to strengthen its partnership with LGUs and Bantay Dagat members by providing opportunities for capacity development, knowledge sharing, psychosocial support, and recognition of exemplary service. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12, through the River Basin Coordinating Office (RBCO) and the Buayan-Malungon River Basin Council, called for strengthened inter-agency and stakeholder collaboration to address emerging concerns in the Buayan-Malungon River Basin during the River Basin Summit held September 29 at Avior Hotel, General Santos City.

The summit brought together members of the Buayan- Malungon River Basin Council, national government agencies, local government units, non-government organizations, and other stakeholders to review the Council’s institutional structure and governance and discuss ongoing interventions in the river basin. These included RBCO-funded projects in Sarangani, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction initiatives, DPWH riverbank protection projects, and water quality monitoring and assessment of the Buayan River by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

In his opening message, DENR-12 Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Engr. Mama G. Samaon underscored the need for immediate and collective action to address concerns affecting the river basin. He urged stakeholders to move beyond identifying problems and work toward practical, science-based, and sustainable solutions through stronger coordination and responsible stewardship of the river and its resources.

Participants also identified the need for updated information on the basin’s ecological condition, sustained water quality and river system monitoring, stronger climate resilience and disaster preparedness, and improved coordination among concerned agencies and stakeholders. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources– Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) General Santos City distributed land titles to qualified beneficiaries in Barangay Silway-7, Polomolok, South Cotabato on September 29, under the department's "Handog Titulo" Program.

The turnover, held at the Barangay Silway-7 Gymnasium, formed part of the celebration of "Handog Titulo" Month and the 125th Anniversary of the Land Management Bureau (LMB), with the theme, “Lupa’t Tahanan, Pamana sa Kinabukasan.”

Among the beneficiaries was a 73-year-old resident who has lived in the area since 1967 and expressed gratitude for finally securing legal documentation for the property her family has occupied for decades.

South Cotabato PENR Officer For. Iskak G. Dipatuan said a land title provides families with security and a legacy that can be passed on to succeeding generations. CENR Officer For. Jerric B. Labor also underscored the careful processes involved in issuing titles and reminded beneficiaries of their responsibility to protect and properly manage their properties.

The activity also featured DENR-CENRO Gensan’s Gender and Development (GAD) advocacy through the distribution of IEC materials on the Anti-VAWC Act, Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, and Anti-Rape Law. Through the Handog Titulo Program, CENRO Gensan continues to facilitate the issuance of agricultural and residential free patents to qualified applicants, strengthening land tenure security while promoting awareness of rights and legal protections in the community. MAGPET, Cotabato — Six Mindanao racket-tails have been given another chance to thrive in the wild after the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Matalam released the birds back into their natural habitat on September 24, 2026.

Said birds were turned over by a concerned citizen from a farm in Magpet, Cotabato, and were subsequently released by CENRO Matalam as an effort to conserve wildlife and return animals to their natural environment whenever it fits to be released.

The Mindanao racket-tail (𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘵𝘪) is a medium-sized parrot endemic to Mindanao and plays an important role in seed dispersal and forest dynamics, particularly in montane habitats.

Ang coral bleaching ay nangyayari kapag nakararanas ng matinding stress ang coral, kadalasan dahil sa pagtaas ng temperatura ng dagat. Kapag matagal nang nakararanas ng stress, maaaring mawala sa coral ang mga microscopic algae na nagbibigay rito ng kulay at ng malaking bahagi ng enerhiya na kailangan nito. Dahil dito, nagiging maputi ang coral at nagiging mas mahina sa iba pang stressors.

Mahalaga ang pagprotekta sa coral reefs dahil hindi lamang sila tahanan ng iba’t ibang uri ng yamang-dagat. Nagbibigay rin sila ng pagkain, kabuhayan, at proteksyon sa mga pamayanang baybayin.

Sa harap ng coral bleaching, maaaring makatulong ang pag-iwas sa pagkasira ng coral reefs, responsableng pangingisda, tamang pamamahala ng basura at wastewater, pag-iwas sa pisikal na pagkasira ng corals, at pakikilahok sa conservation activities.

Ang ating mga karagatan ay tahanan ng iba’t ibang uri ng isda, coral reefs, seagrass, mangroves, at iba pang yamang-dagat na magkakaugnay na bumubuo sa masiglang baybaying at karagatang ekosistema.

Ang yaman ng ating marine biodiversity ay nagbibigay ng pagkain, kabuhayan, at iba pang serbisyong pangkalikasan sa mga pamayanang umaasa sa karagatan. Sa mayamang karagatan ng Pilipinas, bawat uri at bawat tirahan ay may bahagi sa pagpapanatili ng yamang dagat.
