The Environmental Management Bureau Region XII (EMB XII) conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign at Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU) on September 30, 2026, to raise awareness on ozone layer protection, climate action, and environmental stewardship among students and faculty members.
Dubbed โIn the Ozone: Global Action for a Cooler Planet,โ the activity gathered faculty members and students from the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Bachelor of Science in Biology, and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry programs. The event highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing climate change and advancing global efforts under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
In his opening remarks, Engr. Omar M. Saikol, MISDS, Regional Director of EMB XII, underscored the importance of educating the youth on environmental issues and empowering them to become active partners in advancing environmental protection and climate action initiatives.
A welcome address was delivered by Mr. Melvin Apenton, MA, Coordinator of Office of Center for Peace and Environment, who expressed the university's support for collaborative efforts that promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices among students and future environmental professionals.
The IEC campaign featured a series of lectures designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of ozone protection and climate action. Engr. Marc Louise M. Failon, EMS II of the Chemicals and Hazardous Waste Management Section (CHWMS), discussed the fundamentals of ozone protection and the significance of the Montreal Protocol in safeguarding the Earth's atmosphere from ozone-depleting substances.
Participants also learned about the connection between global warming, climate change, and the Kigali Amendment through a lecture delivered by Mr. Jessie M. Gayosa, MIT, MPA, PCpE, Chief of CHWMS and Supervising Environmental Management Specialist of EMB XII. The discussion underscored the global commitment to reducing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potent greenhouse gases commonly used in cooling systems, as part of international efforts to mitigate climate change.
Meanwhile, April Patricia L. Fontanilla, EMS I of the Environmental Education and Information Unit (EEIU), encouraged students to become active contributors to environmental governance and sustainability efforts. The presentation highlighted the vital role of youth participation in shaping policies and community actions that promote environmental protection and responsible stewardship of natural resources.
The activity concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Junar S. Cano, LPT, MS, Program Coordinator of the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Department, who encouraged participants to translate their learning into concrete environmental actions within their communities and future workplaces.
Through the IEC campaign, EMB XII reinforced the significance of ozone layer protection, climate change mitigation, and environmental responsibility while empowering students and educators to become advocates for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future. The activity likewise demonstrated the continuing commitment of EMB XII and academic institutions to fostering environmental awareness and strengthening youth engagement in global and local environmental initiatives.
