Conservation is most effective when it is shared. By bringing together Olangoโs wetland users and tourism stakeholders, we transform collaboration into our most powerful toolโaddressing threats, restoring ecosystems, and safeguarding the islandโs resources for birds, marine life, and people alike.
On May 13, 2026, the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS) celebrated the Month of the Ocean. This activity served to reaffirm the Departmentโs commitment to the protection of migratory bird species and the marine ecosystems that serve as their critical habitats.
Bridging Education and Action
The day was packed with interactive learning, from deep dives into Sanctuary Zoning (Multiple Use vs. Strict Protection) to hands-on bird identification. Participants explored the vital role birds play as natureโs "health indicators"โreminding us that where birds thrive, our oceans and communities flourish.
Stewards of the Sanctuary
The atmosphere was charged with engagement, especially during our "Envi-Trivia" sessions. Local stakeholders left not just as users of the land, but as its primary stewards, recognizing that a healthy environment is their greatest asset.
A Unified Promise
The program concluded with a unified performance of โAgos ng Buhay,โ symbolizing a collective pledge to actively protect and preserve the region's marine and coastal resources. This commitment ensures that the sanctuary remains a viable habitat for wildlife and a sustainable resource for future generations.

Learning, Uniting, Protecting: OIWS Marks WMBD & Month of the Ocean ๐๐ฉต
Our most practical yet transformative conservation strategy is collaboration. By uniting Olangoโs wetland users and tourism stakeholders, we address threats, restore damaged ecosystems, and highlight our islandโs rich resources โ vital to sustaining balanced biodiversity that benefits birds, marine life, wildlife, and our communities.
On May 13, 2026, the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary successfully commemorated World Migratory Bird Day and celebrated the Month of the Ocean, highlighting our strong commitment to protecting migratory birds, marine life, and the rich ecosystems that sustain them.
This commemoration was designed as a fun and educational activity, where learning was delivered through interactive discussions covering the sanctuaryโs diverse resources. Sessions detailed the range of permitted activities within the Multiple Use Zone and the regulations governing the Strict Protection Zone, included hands-on practice in bird identification, and explored the vital role birds play in maintaining balanced biodiversity.
These focused discussions helped participants clearly understand the rules and policies implemented within the sanctuary. More importantly, it awakened their sense of social responsibility โ emphasizing that as primary users and stewards of these resources, they are key partners in sustaining ecological balance, and direct beneficiaries of a healthy environment. Envi-Trivia segments were interspersed throughout the program, making the learning experience engaging and enjoyable for everyone.
Throughout the discussions, the core message emphasized that birds depend on a continuous network of healthy ecosystems to finish their long migratory journeys. Their existence directly reflects the condition of our environment โ a large, thriving bird population signals a healthy ocean and a safe, well-conserved natural habitat for everyone.
The celebration of the Month of the Ocean was made memorable through the collective performance of the โAgos ng Buhayโ dance, joined by all participants. This unified activity served as a powerful expression of their shared willingness and commitment to take an active part in protecting our oceans and the rich marine resources they nurture.

May 6, 2026 โ Delegates of ASEAN For The Peoples Week 2026 visited Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS) โ the Philippinesโ first Ramsar Site โ in partnership with the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation (CCEF).
Aligned with goals to advance Sustainable Development Goals and international commitments, the activity brought together civil society leaders, youth, academics, media, and regional partners for shared learning.
Program activities included environmental discussions on OIWS and San Vicente Marine Protected Area (covering scope, biodiversity, conservation, challenges, and partnerships). Participants also joined an ecosystem and bird watching tour, and a coastal clean-up that collected 6 kg of waste.
Throughout the visit, delegates actively asked questions and shared information about relevant programs and initiatives. This exchange deepened their understanding of OIWSโs rich biodiversity and unique fauna. Such inclusive public engagement not only expands awareness of environmental issues and best conservation practices but also strengthens commitments between partners, paving the way for meaningful collaboration that benefits communities and ecosystems alike.

Earth Day 2026 is a call to act now ๐ฟ๐
We already feel the effects of environmental challenges in our daily lives, from polluted air to unsafe water and stronger climate impacts. When protection is not strengthened, communities are affected first.
But change is always possible when people come together.
โOur Power, Our Planetโ reminds us that every choice mattersโwhen communities protect forests and watersheds, when groups lead cleanups, and when individuals make everyday choices that care for the environment. In return, a healthy planet gives us clean water, food, and protection.
The actions we take today shape the future we all share.
