How Parents Influence Kids' Gender Roles 03/10/2025

Parents influence gender roles by setting different expectations for sons and daughters, choosing gendered toys and clothing, assigning specific chores, and reinforcing traditional behaviors through praise or discipline. Girls may be expected to be nurturing, while boys are encouraged to be assertive. These early influences shape children's understanding of gender norms. However, as societal views shift, many parents are now challenging these stereotypes, allowing kids to explore a broader range of interests and roles. Do you think this shift is becoming more common?

Which of these roles do you think is more acceptable?

Gender roles refer to the culturally defined expectations, behaviors, and attitudes that a society typically associates with individuals based on their s*x. These roles influence a wide range of life aspects, including personality traits, career paths, and responsibilities within the household. Traditionally, men are expected to embody qualities such as strength, assertiveness, leadership, and to serve as the primary financial providers. In contrast, women are often associated with nurturing, empathy, cooperation, and are typically assigned caregiving or homemaking roles.

Gender doesn't define success.

At traditionally, by history talaga, mga lalaki ’yung mga naghe-hepe,” Buaquen said.

'LAGING NUMBER ONE ANG UNIT KO'

Being the first female chief of police of Lipa City, Batangas, Atty. Aleli Cuyan Buaquen said she is prepared to meet public expectations and prove that she can lead effectively in a male-dominated institution.

At traditionally, by history talaga, mga lalaki ’yung mga naghe-hepe,” Buaquen said.

“Lagi namang number one ’yung unit ko pagdating sa operational accomplishments as well as sa administrative,” she added, emphasizing that she has consistently delivered results while balancing her duties as a mother.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 are the unwritten societal rules that dictate how individuals should behave, dress, and act based on their gender.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬, on the other hand, are widely held, often inaccurate beliefs about the characteristics, roles, and behaviors of people of a particular gender. These stereotypes are preconceived ideas that limit individuals by their gender group rather than acknowledging their unique abilities.
