Today, biodiversity continues to face threats from climate change, habitat loss, land conversion, pollution, and illegal wildlife trade. Human activities have greatly affected the balance of our ecosystems, making conservation and environmental protection more important than ever.

With this year’s theme, “𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁,” we are reminded that change starts within our own communities. Simple actions such as protecting natural habitats, reducing waste, planting trees, and respecting wildlife can contribute to the protection of biodiversity and the future of our planet.

𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯:
The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed every May 22 to promote awareness and understanding of biodiversity and its importance to life on Earth. Originally celebrated in December, the United Nations later moved the observance to May 22 to mark the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992

🌍 𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐇 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 🌍

In celebration of Earth Day last April 22, 2026, the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources successfully carried out a series of meaningful environmental activities aimed at promoting collective responsibility and action for our planet.

The day began with a morning clean-up drive along the Mega Highway, joined by committed Legazpi Boulevard streetsweepers, Environmental Action Officers, other OCENR personnel, and volunteers from Brgy. Puro, Legazpi City. This collective effort worked hand in hand to ensure proper waste collection and disposal for a cleaner and safer environment for the community.

In the afternoon, the initiative continued with an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign, along with inspection and enforcement activities conducted in the vicinity of the Legazpi City Obelisk and the Legazpi Night Market. These efforts aimed to raise awareness, strengthen compliance with environmental regulations, and encourage responsible practices among the public and local vendors.

Every small effort creates a ripple of change—your actions truly make a difference, and your voice has the power to inspire others to care, act, and protect our environment.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 🌱🌳

Last 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, as an extension of the Valentine’s Day celebration, hundreds gathered in the spirit of togetherness, hope, and love for the future. During this year’s celebration, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 were replanted at the tree-growing site in 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗱, 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗵𝗮𝗻, 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗽𝗶 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆. These seedlings were sourced from the city-managed Legazpi City Community Seedling Production Hubs.

The event was led by our ever vibrant 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿, 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗕. 𝗜𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹, together with the 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗥). Participants included various City Government offices, National Government Agencies (NGAs), civic groups, members of the academe, Uniformed personnel, and community leaders, each united in purpose and commitment to environmental stewardship. Heartfelt gratitude is extended to all volunteer groups and individual participants who proved that true love is rooted in caring for nature.

Beyond planting trees, this replanting activity represents a collective step toward combating the effects of climate change by strengthening the City’s carbon sinks, protecting biodiversity, and fostering a community that places the environment at the heart of its actions.

Indeed, love grows stronger when we wait for the right time, and when it is nurtured from the roots to canopy.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 🌳 || In celebration of 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝟲𝟵 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮 , 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗽𝗶 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 became the heart of the Carbon-free Legazpi initiative, a community where life is deeply intertwined with the forests, land, and natural environment.

To further strengthen this connection, the City Government of Legazpi, through the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources- LGU Legazpi, conducted a 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 (𝗖𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗔) Campaign last April 22, 2026, focusing on 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲-𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

The activity brought together local leaders, women’s organizations, farmers, fisherfolk, and forest-dependent communities. A key highlight of the event was the participants’ strong enthusiasm and their shared aspiration to organize into a unified group committed to environmental stewardship and the sustainable protection and use of forest and natural resources.

Resource speakers from 𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗥 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗩, 𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗥-𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗥𝗢 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗮𝘆, 𝗕𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗕𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗟𝗕𝗔𝗙𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 shared valuable insights and expertise on forest conservation, community-based resource governance, biodiversity, and climate-resilient livelihoods. Their discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening local partnerships and empowering communities as frontline stewards of the environment.

Topics covered included forest protection and conservation through policy implementation, the role of communities in forest management, biodiversity and environmental integrity, agroforestry as a sustainable livelihood strategy, and the strengthening of people’s organizations for community development and forest stewardship. Participants also received the 𝗞𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗞𝗮𝗵𝘂𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗘𝗖 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗲 to further deepen their understanding of the role of trees as nature-based solutions and their importance in climate action and mitigation efforts.

The 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗽𝗶, through the 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗥), will celebrate Earth Day 2026, 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 through the conduct of a 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 (CEEPA) entitled “𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.”

This activity will be conducted in Barangay Buenavista, Legazpi City, where a significant portion of the city’s southern forestlands is located. The campaign will engage target participants including 𝗕𝗟𝗚𝗨 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁-𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, to strengthen awareness on sustainable forest resource use and promote active participation in the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of forestlands and resources.
